UK callsign changes due to UK amateur licence updates.

Many of you will have noticed that there has been a large number of callsign changes in the UK over the last week or so. This is because the UK licencing body, Ofcom, is introducing its licence updates. This includes allowing UK Intermediate Licence holders to swap 2#nXXX calls for M8XXX/M9XXX calls. And for UK Full licence holders to swap their existing call for any Full category yet to be issued or previously issued but revoked.

I thought it may be a good idea for everyone who has changed their callsign to post the old and new calls in this thread so we have somewhere were we can look up who is who.

I’ll go first.

Old call: MM0FMF
New call: GM4LLD

OK I’ll bite too…

Old call: G0AZS

New call: G5TEA

Virtually twice as quick on CW so efficiency won over 40 years worth of nostalgia/vanity :joy:

Interestingly when trawling the callsign spreadsheet, there are plenty of ā€œnormalā€ calls that were never issued and now available.

Also I found a few calls from operators who are still QRV yet the portal has made their call available to all as they must’ve lapsed years ago. You have all validated your UK calls every 5 years haven’t you?!

Why? [MM0FMF was so memorable to many of us]

And could I swap mine for M(*)0FMF now?

Confusion reigns.

Have you told Mrs FMF that she has also changed her name? (Or did you just opt for a new wife? )

Seriously, it’s going to take a while to get used to the new callsigns. FMF was almost as memorable as the man behind the call.

I think you need to wait 5 years before it will be available again so set a reminder on your phone.

Tried to chase your new call at lunchtime today but signal wasn’t making it south on 40m.

Fortunately made it north to GM5ALX a wee while later.

That’s a shame Andy. I managed the South of France on 40m from G/CE-004 (Bardon Hill Leicestershire); not bad considering I had forgotten to charge the LiPo4 and was only running the KX2 on 7W:

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t even bother with 20m, as it was wall to wall ā€œCQ contestā€. Martin (M8BIA) on G/SP-004 reported 17m was open, but sadly it started raining before I could finish the pileup on 40m and jump on 17m. 24 QSOs, 2 S2S and a complete. Happy with that!

Old calls (mostly used for SOTA) - 2W0JFJ, MW0YUK

New call most likely to be used is GW5JFJ, since most of my operating is across the border.

I’ve just noticed that this reflector has airbrushed out the former callsign of at least one contributor for posts going back many years and replaced it by his recently-assigned replacement callsign. It looks like I and others have been using the new callsign in our posts for donkey’s years.

I wish it worked by keeping the old callsign thus preserving the context of the original posts and applying the replacement callsign only to new posts from the time the user changed his callsign.

I think that now matter how things change on here there will be good and less-good (bad?) effects to the change. If you click my lovely avatar (no matter which one is in use) you get to see the following text ā€œFormerly MM0FMF, Member of the SOTA MTā€¦ā€ It seemed like a wise move to add that in.

That’s spoilt the joke I was going to make [with apologies to Prince] the next time I posted to you addressing you as ā€˜The SOTA Artist Formerly Known As MM0FMF’

I don’t have good memory for callsigns, both long and short term.

It takes me years to get used to one and recognise it on-air.

Puzzlingly I’m good at callsigns (or was before you G/Ms started playing musical chairs with them). It’s names I’ve struggled with for my entire life!

Explain that if you can!

Actually - to answer my own question: if all conversations in life had each over preceeded with ā€˜### from Matt’, I’d probably remember names too!

I’m the same. I can remember a few names of familiar callsigns some of which won’t be heard again (for at least 5 years). I put my name in my self-spots and get a surprising number of chasers who reply using it.
