You suggest it first and then it makes anywhere else look reasonable ![]()
I like your style… although I suspect my wife wouldn’t fall for that one.
Seriously though… @MM0EFI has made me think of looking further afield. Probably not this winter.
When you come to retire Fraser are you planning on organising SOTA activation holidays ![]()
Excellent video Fraser. A change from the usual scenery. I particularly enjoyed Mo’s enthusiastic approval when you asked if you could try one more band!
Are you offering a discount if the book and video are purchased together at the same time?
Hi Fraser and Mo, thanks for your report with a great video. Well done; great achievement. ![]()
10m has been working great; I’m hearing signals I haven’t heard before or have been so down that were just readable. A real change
Cheers to you and Mo

Great report. Watched the video too. It brought back some memories as I lived for a good few years in .ky - good to see the year round sunshine and clear waters again!
I had a look there to see if there were any SOTA summits but not surprised to see there are none as most of Grand Cayman is below sea level, and Cayman Brac (pop. about 1500) and Little Cayman (pop. about 25) are more sandbars - particularly the latter - I wonder if Little Cayman qualifies as an IOTA?
EDIT: Forgot to add, the bit about turtles reminded me, if you are in to this stuff and are ever visiting Grand Cayman, there is a turtle farm up in West Bay which has a similar protection and conservation project (ironically you can also walk in to any shop, supermarket or petrol station and buy a turtle patty - like a Cornish pastie - never tried one myself, doesn’t feel right to me).
There is also the Queen Elizabeth park which has a conservation and protection lands for Blue Iguanas which are from the area and particularly respected by locals. If you see one crossing the road you stop the car and let them cross. There might actually be a law about that too as they are protected species, I forget now.
Good memories though, so thanks for inadvertently bringing them flooding back and well done once again on the successful activation and the report.

Cheers Ian. I suspect if you checked the https://www.iota-world.org/ website, youd find out they all are. Barbados certainly is.
Interesting. I was only checking that site recently as I’ve an eye on a couple of possible IOTA’s in the coming year.
W NA-016 ZF seems to cover all three islands.
Yup. It will likely be -2°C wind-chill for this week’s SOTA activity up at Glenshee.
In warmer news, Mo announced she’d like to return to the island for a big birthday she has in a couple of years, so might get another shot at Mt. Hillaby.
If/when you return do you keep the same call sign?
Possibly. If I keep paying $30 BBD a year…
Ahh right. £12 a year ish… If you do. Depends if its worth keeping it up to save the fun and games of re-applying in a couple of years.
As you seem to be a bit light on UK calls held then it’s worth doing. Everyone knows the more callsigns you hold the better a ham you are. ![]()
Or not!
I was 9X0CX in Rwanda in 2012. They had so few foreigner amateurs there that I was personally invited to meet the director of telecoms and he personally handed my license over. I must dig it out and see if it is still valid.
Well played Sir. ![]()
You would have done the same i’m sure. ![]()
That hotel was close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. I remember the manager was quite relaxed about me setting up a radio. The hotel was built into the side of a hill, so I climbed up the balcony wall and onto the stepped roof, placing the pole on the slope behind the building. If I’d fallen off, it wouldn’t have been pretty.
