Realising I hadnt gained my point for G/SP-015 yet this year & a lack of management at work, I decided a trip was in order. On the summit, after setting up for 12m I scanned the band & it sounded dead! A scan around 10m revealed a few weak Russians - things werent looking good for 12m. A quick check on 6m showed it was full of strong signals from all around Europe.
A self spot through radio rucksack tool (had to walk around to get 3g) and I was ready to go. A little over an hours operating netted 51 contacts including s2s with M0KCB/P, OK1DIG/P & S56LXN/P - not bad for a band that sounded dead. Must try the 3ele beam from SP-013 one of these days.
73.

Hi and thanks four our S2S contact yesterday.
The conditions were good with Es skip sometimes less than
than 500km. I manged to work 61 contacts during the day using the
KX3 and AlexLoop.

Hi Mick,
it was a pleasure to work 12m in SSB when
the band was open. I will check the SSB part
of the band more often when the conditions
are good.
You’ll have to stop doing these 9 summit days Dan, or we’ll never catch you in the 12m Challenge! There is only one pair of summits here that I could move across in less than one hour (last QSO to first QSO).
Hoping for good condx on 12m when I am in GD next week.
In reply to M1EYP:
Hi Tom,
I am running out of locations with high density of summits
unless I have to travel quite far from my QTH :). The long summer
days are fine to plan some multisummit expeditions, using the magnetic
loop antenna allows me to be QRV in 3 minutes after arrival to the
summit.
I hope to work you from GD next weekend, the WX forecast here
looks good so I hope to be QRV. Check www.aprs.fi for my location.
Do contacts with the same station (whether activator or chaser) on different modes count as multiple contacts?
The quote below leads me to believe it doesn`t.
“Chasers can chase the same summit twice on the same day, once on 12m and once on any other band and score points.”
If I`m wrong, I suppose it would pay me to ask ssb stations to flick over to FM then AM to boost my score. Or even dust off the paddle & carry my tablet pc.
I think that wording you quote is slightly wrong Steve. Thanks for pointing it out. Whether the technique you describe would enhance your QSO rate or in fact slow it down is open to conjecture. There is also a slight bug still in the scoring algorithm, but it should be fixed soon.
So far I’ve managed to leave myself lots of easy summits to count as multipliers as well as SOTA points in January to May of 2014. But that does mean that I am needing to travel further and wider to get 12m Challenge multipliers in 2013. I thought I might have just caught you up after the last week or so of SOTAing, but you’ve managed to stay ahead. Should be interesting as it develops.
In reply to M1EYP:
I’m slightly confused now (it doesn’t take much ;o)
Are we saying that, on 12m, two contacts with the same station on the same day, but different modes, counts for two lots of points, or just one?
The Challenge is to promote activity on the band. So a QSO on a different modes with a station already worked will count for another point. As I understand it.
Looks like Ill need to dust off the paddle & start digimodes if I want to compete - even if its not competetive. Also I`ll have to start working a certain M6 in Leeds.
It’s certainly doing that. We started with about 1000 QSOs logged in 10 years of SOTA. With 2.5 months of the challenge over we have nearly 6200 QSOs logged. At this rate, should it continue, I’d expect to see about 25000 QSOs by the end which will put 12m above 17m,15m,4m,10m & 6m.
Had I realised how popular this would be, I’d have put something in about 12m S2S contacts scoring double or something similar. It puts a smile on my face when I manage to get such QSOs in the log.
I haven’t seen one of those for years. Even if you did find one, getting the matching carrying harness will be problematic. You could operate it like an accordion perhaps?
