The work to produce the honour rolls for the challenge is ongoing. In the meantime here is a list of activators who have logged 12m QSOs since the challenge began.

Impressive list! Surprising to note how far down it is before anyone from the USA appears

Thanks Andy.

In reply to G3CWI:

I’m finding it hard going as a chaser, I look for every spotted activation during the time I am near the radio and usually hear nothing: so far just two successful chases!

Brian GV8ADD

In reply to G8ADD:

I’ll run a chaser table tonight as part of the development process and will post the results.

Things I have learnt. 12m is open more often than many think. It’s another classic “tune about and listen, nothing heard, band is closed” situation. If you spend time calling and let people know you are calling then you find it is open more often. Another is that it can flip between open and closed quickly. You call and someone comes back. You scan the band and there are signals. Then, zap, there’s nothing. Yet 5mins later the band is back full of signals.

I’ve got 2 antennas in use from the summits, a 1/4wave GP and an adaption to my Buddistick clone. I’ve had QSOs on both but I don’t know which is better as conditions have been flipping quickly. I’ll try a delta loop and dipole so see how things go. This is all part of the fun of the challenge, not to actually be top-dog, but to be encouraged to try things and find out which works best because there are others who will be experimenting at the same time.

It is worth adding that even if the band is not open as such, it is still capable of 2m FM type coverage on goundwave. So if an activation is spotted on 12m and it is within your normal 2m FM range, chances are you’ll hear it.

In reply to MM0FMF:
Hi Andy
I agree with your comments, I have heard nothing but listened for a few minutes and then a signal has appeared long enough to make a 2 way contact also I have 2 Antennas 1 vertical and 1 horizontal and sometimes one polarization works better than the other. Looking forward to the chaser list.
Steve G6LUZ

In reply to G6LUZ:
Hi Steve

I totally agree with you and Andy. I also have two antennas, a vertical and a long wire. I find the vertical gives the best results most of the time. I always switch between antennas to see the difference in signals.

After a quick look at the 12m QSOs logged this year I think you will be at the top of the chaser list

In reply to M1EYP:

… even if the band is not open as such, it is still capable of 2m FM type coverage…

Precisely Tom, but chasers need to know you are there. To be successful on the band you need the ability to self-spot. I tried several times to get spotted on 24MHz CW on the last outing, but I had no 3G coverage and the RBN did not find me. Unfortunately SMS spotting wasn’t set up on the phone that I had with me, so no contacts were made.

73, Gerald G4OIG

In reply to G4OIG:

It was 2m FM type coverage that netted me a QSO with Ken GM0AXY on Sunday. Even though quite a lot of Edinburgh was hiding behind the rest of the Pentland Hills, Ken was my first QSO as he’d seen the spot. The distance was less than 15miles.

I’m not sure how much RBN coverage there is on 12m. Time for a dig about on the net whilst my USB EHCI simulation builds in the background…

Technically it isn’t of course but let’s not let the facts get in the way.

I tend to find that RBN coverage on 12m and 10m improves as North America wakes up (in a radio sense). Prior to that, you sometimes get lucky with a pick-up in Sweden or Finland, but it can be difficult to get any of the skimmers to notice you.

It probably could have netted me as well (Roan Fell GM/SS-132), but unfortunately I didn’t realise that you were QRV. I decided to play on 18MHz on that one. :frowning:

In reply to G3CWI:

Whatever the technicalities, on the 2nd June I worked Inky on G/SP-001 on 24 megs SSB, and have made similar semi-local contacts from time to time on all the HF bands 20m - 10m. It isn’t reliable, but it does happen!

In reply to MM0FMF:

Hmmm, the table makes interesting reading, looks like I’ll have to dust off the paddle. Should be interesting when the F layer propogation returns in the Autumn (hopefully). The chaser table will be interesting, I expect to see a few EA stations setting the pace as in my experience, the band always seems open to one part of Spain or the other.

In reply to G1INK:

Or as we dicussed earlier Steve, maybe dust off the 2m beam. Looking at todays 2m log from Shining Tor, a 202 mile hop with GV3AH into Princetown Devon and a 147 mile hop with 2E0ZED into Alnwick, both on my handheld tell me VHF conditions are pretty good, with more to come tomorrow if you put your faith in Hepburn.

In reply to MM0FMF:

Hi Andy,

Just came across something while uploading QSOs for the 12m challenge. Which leads me to this question.

If I have a QSO (on same date, from same summit) with a chaser on mode SSB then with the same Chaser (lets say 10 minutes later) on mode PSK, then this is classed as 2 contacts!? i.e. 2 points?

Thanks

In reply to M0KCB:

D’Oh!

Yes, that’s a bug. I’ve just got the tables working so I may make them available with that bug in for now, just so I can get some user testing on them to see if there’s anything else I’ve missed.

Thanks for the report Darius.

The honour rolls for activator and chasers for the 12m challenge are now available on the “View Results” menu on the database. There’s no date filtering as the date this challenge is valid is fixed, 1st-June-2013 to 31st-May-2014. Nor is there any filtering by mode as the challenge aim is to promote all activity on this band.
