Markus usually makes these SOTA trips using public transport. That always requires quite a bit of planning—but he is a master at it.
Although he has been heard operating in CW, he makes most of his contacts in SSB. Hardly anything fazes him while doing so… when he is once again “giving meaning to a pile of rocks.”

Five Mountain Goats, nearly 1,000 activations, almost 700 unique summits, and more than nine years of enjoying the hills with a radio in your backpack – that’s a fantastic achievement and a wonderful record of dedication to SOTA.
I’ve always liked that you’re not only chasing the famous peaks. Whether it’s a well-known summit or a quiet little hill that rarely sees activators, you always seem to find interesting places to put on the air. It shows that SOTA isn’t just about collecting points, but about enjoying the mountains in all their variety.
Wishing you many more years of fun with this fantastic hobby, plenty of memorable activations, and countless enjoyable days in the mountains. I hope to catch you again soon in another summit-to-summit QSO.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch Markus! Very impressive achievement - and with delicate attention to your footprint. It’s always a pleasure to catch you Markus, if and when you take out your paddle. I wish you many more mountains to come and fruitful meetings with goats, mountains or not.
After reading your kind comments so far, I can’t help but keep going! But it’s not hard for me, either. In addition to SOTA’s simple and robust setup, the many contacts with other participants are the icing on the cake resp. the salt in the soup as we say here in German-speaking countries – and I like cakes and good soups. That makes it easier for me to let my sun shine, too! And this is my experience from more than nine years.
The Goat activation was a special adventure for me, one I was able to share with René, HB9CRY. René and I have known each other since my early days as a ham radio operator, so it was really nice that he was part of the action today. René also does a lot of activations using public transportation. I’ll be posting more about today’s adventure here soon.
