On the few occasions I have had a laptop in the field, I have found that FT4 is a good mode to get away from the congestion on FT8.
FT8 on the published frequencies is great for finding random QSOs but when the 10m band is open the SOTA activators are drowned, out by everybody else.
Moving to FT4 and spotting on SOTAwatch would bring a few contacts that I couldn’t resolve within the madness of FT8.
YMMV
For FT8, I get more enjoyment by operating on 28.084 MHz. Just need to be 100% clear in the SOTA spot comments field that you are operating on FT8 @ 28.084. I’ve had no issues with chasers following me up to 28.084 MHz.

I have been using FT8 with my smartphone for SOTA for 6 months. This has brought me some nice DX contacts. I haven’t tried FT4 yet. But I will test this at some future date.
I even find that FT4 is easier and faster than FT8 in a mountain activation and prefer it. However, there are actually very few FT4 stations available. What a pity.
