The 10 m S2S EU <> VK challenge (Part 2)

An hour less as the clocks go forward.

Let’s say the VK time window would be from 0730 utc. This would be 0830 CET or 0930 CEST. So, one hour more.

The wx forecast here looks good for Sunday morning :sunny:
I can try to be on my local summit (DM/BW-099 - again). What troubles me is the fact that 20m LP doesn’t look good and my location isn’t suitable for SP
Could 17m/15m LP be an option?

VOACAP simulation made for 100W CW between VK1 - DL:

VK1 sunset is at 0805 UTC.

I will activate Yellow Rabbit Hill VK1/AC-039 from 0630 UTC to sunset.

Antenna options will include 20, 17 and 10m

Roman, I put in 50 W SSB and antennas close to reality and it looked even worse.

I will probably focus on 10 m.

Thanks @VK1AD - That’s my plan for too. - alerted for 06.30z

Looking forward to it, sunrise is 05:50z , So 20 m long path should be good to go from 6.30 and hopefully 10 starts is stuff about 7.30+

Usually the LP to Down Under is very reliable around this time of the year. I remember having a QSO with @VK1AD on 20m with 10 W SSB and an end fed wire thrown into a bush.
So let’s pretend the propagation forecast is too pessimistic and hopefully condx will be much better!

Its a zoo.

No space for a sota signal. Packing now without calling cq.

Very Frustrating, finding space on 20m and even 10m. Contesters everywhere putting out huge power and sadly including the 14.300 to 14.350mhz segment.

But great to get you Andrew @VK1AD !!! Followed by a ZL station! Thank you for persisting. In between the QRM, you are genuinely 57

Sadly I don’t have a 17m vertical. Time to build one.

Always I’ll check before doing an activity on the weekend if there is a contest whether in CW or SSB

CQ WW WPX is the largest contest in the world so the bands will be busy.

14.300-.14.350 is marked SSB in all the bandplans I can see and none say “no contest traffic”

You’ve got 17/12m and if 10 is open then so is 12.

And you have the option to switch to CW or DATA modes to escape contest traffic. The more modes you can use the more options you have to choose from. Even if you don’t know CW yet you can get capable enough to operate at only 10-12wpm and then you can go out and use it to complete QSOs on events like this when your primary mode is compromised or affected. And even if you don’t like using it compared to actually using SSB and talking to people you still have it to fall back on.

Setting up big competitive contest stations requires lots of money to buy the equipment and install it, it requires people to be active for 24/48 hrs which means there’s a big time cost and many people have little time to do what they want. So these people only do it because there are enough stations calling the contesters. i.e. the bands are crammed because lots of people want to take part in the contests.

That’s why you need an alternate mode to use when these things get in the way. But I do understand it can be annoying when the bands are open for what you want to do and there’s even more contest stations audible!

17m vertical… if you have a 20m 1/4wave GP, just fit links in the radiator and radials, it’s the least effort way. You may want to consider 15m links as well. We are probably on the decline of this solar cycle now but 15m will be good for a while to come even if 10/12 are less usable.

And you did get a VK S2S QSO
