you hear HB and your brain is guessing it will be HB9, instead the call is in reality HB3

My usual problem is confusing ‘H’ with ‘S’ so I think it’s SB9 but realize it must be HB9 when I recognize the “BIN” that follows.

I remember having to spell out umlauted vowels in full in the basic German lessons I was given whilst working for an American company (Motorola) near Munich from 1979-1981. Unfortunately, the working language was English and, in any case, my basic German was far too primitive to have highly technical discussions with my colleagues.

In hamradio a lot is done in English. Ragchew with head copy cw is not easy. Now think of someone who is not native English speaker. Very difficult

I have nothing but immense admiration for non-native speakers head copying English with its crazy spelling.

word starts with a K in English it is with a C

Blame the Normans for invading England in 1066 and messing with the language. I think spelling was more consistent in Anglo-Saxon times.

Yet another damn CW thread!!!!!

So there are already an impressive number of CW threads on here already, and I’ve sat down and read all of them at some point. Just about all of them seem to be angled from the point of view of an activator wanting to learn CW to activate summits but I’m coming at this from the point of view of a chaser who wants to learn CW to chase the summits that I’m missing from being SSB only (with the occasional local summit on FM thrown in). QRS & Farnsworth Spacing

I am trying hard to learn Morse and I’m struggling a bit on the air. How do you get the other station to increase the spacing between characters but keep the character speed the same. I can copy 20 wpm with 10 wpm spacing or less. When I send QRS I get slower Morse but the spacing is still to close. I find I need more processing time to read slower Morse with closer spacing. Is there a Q code or pro-sign to ask for increased spacing only ?? I feel this would give me more confidence and help me g…
