Hallo Gerd @DF9TS, könntest du dir diese Liste mit schlechten Gipfelpositionen anschauen?

I should warn you before you invest too much effort that I’ve been doing my own review. I’ll try to get this finished off soon. I’ll have revised positions, likewise according to Bayern Atlas, and a complete set of prominence data.

Thanks for the ominous “warning” Simon, but you really shouldn’t worry yourself too much on that score. I had identified these bad positions in June of last year and had sent them by email to a couple of people, and you yourself received a slightly shorter version of this list at that time (June 18 2022) by email.

I left it at that, thinking the information might filter down gradually to whomever was responsible for making any changes, but after this much time, I could see that nothing had yet been done to make any changes to these summits’ positions. Hence my posting the list here in the Reflector to see if that might speed up the process - how very presumptuous of me.

Sorry to have over-stepped the mark: I consider myself to be suitably warned and castigated by my betters, and will hesitate in future before acting on any rash impulse to second-guess the very admirable work performed by the MT in keeping their data up to date.

It was only meant as a warning in the sense of saving you some effort. I’ve taken Bayern Atlas positions for all DL summits but the work to transcribe these back into the system awaits finding an opportunity between other work. I’ll try to raise this in priority. Thank you for the nudge.

Thanks for being so considerate. The issue is not really one of great importance, since many activists are pretty sensible people, being able to spot when their GPS system leads them to some point which is obviously not at the top of a hill.

The trouble is that many of the lower SOTA summits around here are covered in dense forest, with the last few hundred meters - up to a kilometer or so - often without any paths, such that spotting the highest ground is often difficult, and navigating solely via GPS or dead reckoning to a point which is not the true summit might lead to activations which are not truly valid (as, I suspect, may be the case with the Rotwand DL/BE-073 where the present SOTA DB position leads people close to a popular lookout over 1/3 kilometer away from, and 60 meters below, the true summit). Worse, it might lead some into places where the ground suddenly drops away beneath their feet. But I’m sure you’re already well aware of these issues.

I look forward to seeing the results of your work in the DL/BE and DL/MF regions which are the closest to home for me.
