I will be staying for a few days at a campsite near Keswick next March. Swinside G/LD-057 is the closest SOTA summit but the very low number of activations, just 38 at the time of writing hints at the problem - access. The summit is not open to the public but activators have gained access in the past, particularly in March.
A company offering quad bike tours was the point of contact but they have closed, citing the cost of insurance as the problem. I’ve emailed them but after 2 weeks there has been no response. The email didn’t bounce back but it seems no one is monitoring it.
So I’m stuck and any advice on who I can contact will be gratefully received.
I e-mailed last year and got no response, and it is one of my few remaining LD summits to activate so I’m in. I’ll try and e-mail again.
If that fails and there is the interest we could try a different approach.
Ben had a similar problem with GW/MW-032 which in the end he solved by getting access for a fairly large group of activators and paying some money to a charity nominated by the estate…. (I think we payed a tenner each so it was probably about £200 to the charity).
If we can’t get access for free is there the interest in an organised approach? I’ll keep this thread updated if I hear anything by e-mail.
I wasn’t aware that the Quad Bike Company who owned the estate where Swinside G/LD-057 had closed down. While this company were operating, it was to my best understanding that they were happy to grant permission to people to access this summit in the month of March each year.
I would suggest if you are struggling to find as to who is now the correct contact to try and obtain permission to activate Swinside G/LD-057 to get in contact with Mark @M5TEA (formerly M0NOM) as he is the Region Manager for the G/LD Region.
@G4IPB Hi Paul, Nic and I would be very interested in joining you if you are able to organise an agreed activity day. We’re happy to contribute towards reasonable costs, as I did with Ben’s access arrangements for GW/MW-032. I’d have loved to use the quad bike option , but happy to walk.
I recon given how insular Cumbria is there wouldn’t be too many degrees of freedom required to get a contact, if no-one else comes up with something, based on recent experience.
