Suggestions for UK Summits during Visit

Hi All,
I will have a free weekend on June 7/8 while in UK and would like some suggestions on a summit or two that I could activate. I will be staying in Derby and it looks like the Southern Pennines are not too far away. Will most likely take the FT-817 and EFHW.
Cheers,
Glenn, VK3YY.

Hi Glen,

G/SP-004 Shining Tor, is an absolute must! IMHO, easily the best of the South Pennine hills, for radio. Steady 30 minute walk to this lovely summit. If you take a VHF antenna and work FM, you’ll run out of batteries before you run out of contacts on a weekend.

Sadly, I’m working on both the 7th and 8th :frowning:

Enjoy your visit.

Hi Glenn

Sp-004, sp-013 and sp-015 are the most popular trio of summits in the SOTA database. SOTA Database

All three can be done in a day including a pub lunch. Feel free to pm me for suggestions to fit in with your plans. Richard@sotabeams.co.uk

If you want to borrow a mast to support your antenna, let me know.

Thanks Mike and Richard, sounds great. Will read up on those three summits then. Thanks for the offer of the mast, I should be able to pack my mini-squid pole.
Cheers,
Glenn, VK3YY.

For the other day, Bardon Hil CE-004 is easy too.

If you do need anything, get in touch.

Hi Tony, it would be terrific to work you in France! Ed said he might be about as well.
Cheers,
Glenn.

Given the not so good weather forecast for the upcoming weekend, out of the recommended summits, which would be the easiest/best to access in rainy weather?

Cheers,
Glenn VK3YY

In reply to VK3YY:

Hi Glenn

If you are limited by time or the weather (or both) I would recommend The Cloud (G/SP-015). Very easy access, short walk and more importantly, plenty of places to shelter from the wind and rain.

Near to the Trig Point there is a nice depression which makes a comfortable place to activate from.

Carolyn

I have a selection of 14 different operating locations on Cloud summit, that I choose according to weather, band etc. If you are visiting my local summits, let me know when and I will try to join you.

One of my bands is playing in Macclesfield on the Saturday night too, at The Wharf on Brook Street (SK11 7AW), so come along for the evening if you fancy a bit of live music and real ale!

Hi Carolyn, thanks for the advice, I might head for the Cloud then on Saturday morning and see how the weather is!

Hi Tom,
I have both days for venturing out and might try the Cloud on Saturday morning. Also plan to venture out on Sunday to a couple of others with hopefully better weather such as Shining Tor or Gun.
Company would be great!
Cheers,
Glenn, VK3YY.

If it’s raining on Saturday morning, feel free to call in to SOTABEAMS’ factory (in Macclesfield) for a cup of coffee. I will be there from 0830-1200 with my colleague Reece.
