Southport - the long way round

Macclesfield Town were away at a pre-season friendly versus Southport. Marianne was sleeping ahead of a night-shift. Jimmy said “We could go to that Dad, and activate Billinge Hill on the way”. “And Winter Hill on the way back” I replied. And so we did.

That’s about it really. Nothing much more to report. Both activations completed handheld style to keep summit time necessarily short in order to catch the match/get home at a reasonable hour.

The activations were nice, and completed in good weather. I later discovered that Ian BRS188236 had achieved his SWL Shack Sloth by listening to Jimmy’s activation of Billinge Hill. Despite the lack of ‘proper’ radio and aerial, plenty of contacts were made, and no major problems were experienced from the masts on the two summits. The football match was dire, with Macclesfield turning in a dreadful and insipid display, and getting turned over 2-0 by their non-League counterparts. However, the buffet Chinese meal on the road out of Southport was very enjoyable.
