The SOTA Weatherbot hosted by Dave, N7LKL https://sotaweatherbot.wordpress.com/ also includes a summit-specific propagation forecast based on a VOACAP (Voice of America Coverage Analysis Program) model using typical QRP 5 watt CW with ground-mounted vertical transmit antenna.
It looks like 17M will be my best bet looking East on Saturday for trans-Atlantic s2s, likely followed by 15M.
I was following you around the bands today Mike to see whether I could hear you. I did hear you very weakly on 17m for a minute or two, but not on any other band. Conditions were absolutely dire. I completed just one T/A S2S on 17m CW.… could have been two, but another station started up within 50Hz totally unannounced which had me cursing.
I first went onto 17m at around 13:30z and at 13:33z I worked LZ4GL at 599 both ways. I thought I might get more EU contacts, but none came. Then I heard Roy WN3F call me at 13:40z. It was a difficult contact. He did peak at s3, then went back down to just above the noise level. Pat WW4D called shortly afterwards, but the QSO was spoilt by a station calling CQ unannounced and I didn’t get my report. I think the propagation then went downhill…. if it could get any worse.
I recall being called for quite a while by someone whose call I couldn’t decipher. That might have been when you called me on 20m. I had a trickle of EU S2S contacts on CW before trying 20m SSB which provided just two QSOs into south-east Europe.
Thanks for trying. I know we usually make it, but conditions had the upper hand this time.
