SOTA NEW ZEALAND REPORT from Warren ZL2AJ
Activity Report for November / December 2017
List Summits activated
As you can see in 2 months 58 ZL summits have been activated. From a wet spring to a sunny summer – well mostly. Several tourists have helped make up these numbers. ZL/HB9DQM Manuel, with whom I had the pleasure of jointly activating Maungakawa, arrived amid a tour of New Caledonia, New Zealand and Australia. Manuel is also the author of the Hamalert app which I only discovered while decending from the summit. Check out his app at iTunes or Google playstore, or at hamalert.org. Manuel activated 13 summits while here enjoying our scenery.
Other tourists ZL/M0WML, ZL/M0VFC Robert, ZL/K6KWI Neil and ZL/VK2NU David activated a further 7 Summits between them. I think an approach to the minister of tourism is in order here as SOTA seems to be bringing the hams to ZL. This leaves locals with a total of 39 Summits activated (plus one more I know happened but hasn’t been entered into the database yet). This includes ZL1SKL Soren with his first activation. Well done Soren we hope to hear you on the air again soon.
New Year’s UTC rollover saw 4 concurrent activations – all in the ZL1/WK Waikato region. John ZL1BYZ ascended Te Aroha – a slog I have heard – it’s on my list to do when I feel a little fitter. John ZL1PO was on Sanatorium hill / Pukemako, near Cambridge. This is an easy summit to activate if you want to try your gear out without the disappointment of things not working after a long walk. ZL2KGF activated ZL1/WK-142 – Taumatamaire Road (near Awakino). Kyle made his 100 chaser points, a goal he has been trying to achieve for some time. He also added 46 Summit to summit points to his log, and a complete, as well as 2 activator points. Lastly I activated Pureora ZL1/WK-024. This wasn’t my first visit to Pureora however as I hadn’t activated it in 2017 it would be a nice one for the double activation that New Year’s Day provides. Unfortunately, the ideal weather we had been having disappeared and we were in sideways drizzle for our activation. This meant after I had my 4 contacts after the roll over I was out of there. Even so I made 12 summit to summit contacts, a complete, and gained 12 activator points. We walked out drenched to the bone but that was nothing a hot chocolate from Te Kuiti didn’t fix.
In other news, 3 new summits have been added to ZL1/NL region. All islands, but added for completeness. A few names and positions of summits were also updated recently. Thanks to all the region managers, activators and chasers for SOTA in 2017. Bring on 2018.

To conclude the celebration year 2017, here are some figures of the 10-years ON association award so far:

38 certificate have been awarded. -
17 activator have achieved the ACTIVATOR award. They activated at least 10 different ON summits in 2017. The first one was awarded to Frank ON6UU. -
17 chasers have achieved the CHASER award. They chased at least 10 different ON summits in 2017. Number 1 was Hansjoerg OE7PHI. -
4 COMPLETED awards are distributed so far. To achieve this award one has to activate and chase 10 pairs of ON summits in 2017. Jan OK2PDT was the first who managed to get this rather difficult award. -

Non-ON stations claimed the majority of the awards.

Activations in EA8/GC – Geert PA7ZEE
During our wintering in the coming weeks on Gran Canaria Island I hope to activate many summits. Some ones where I have been before but also some virgin summits.

SOTA ON TOP BAND - Mark G0VOF
Hello everyone & welcome to this month’s edition of SOTA on Top Band.
One activator ventured onto the band this month from two summits.
On 12th December, John G4YSS activated G/LD-003 Helvellyn where he made one QSO with Phil G4OBK using CW. John was out again the following day activating G-LD-037 Little Mell Fell where he had more success making a good total of 7 QSO’s (5 CW / 2 SSB).

At the time of writing, those were the only Top band activation during December that I am aware of, if I have missed any others please let me know.

Here are some statistics for 2017. Activity has increased from 2016 with 193 QSO’s made during 33 activations with many VK activators in the figures this year.
15 activators tried the band with CW being the favoured mode follwed by SSB. The table below shows all activations duing 2017:

CW REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2017 - Roy G4SSH
Right on cue, the start of the Winter Bonus coincided with the first snowfall of the winter at my QTH on the North Sea coast of the U.K. Unfortunately, severe winter weather across most of Europe, and Christmas family activities kept SOTA activations to a very low level during the month, with many cancellations and abandonment’s.
The first highlight being Manuel ZL/HB9DQM/p, fresh from his activations in New Caledonia, was now active from New Zealand around midnight UTC.
