SOTA Activity Report for November / December 2016
List Summits activated
The last two months, with the onset of summer has seen an increase in SOTA activity. Andrew ZL3CC has been the first to activate a West Coast (ZL3/WC) summit along with activating a summit near Dansey’s Pass and Castle Hill. All 3 summits in different regions. Castle Hill is the highest summit to be activated in New Zealand to date with a height of 1998 mASL. Andrew was also kind enough to take me to Cooper’s Knob ZL3/CB-806 while I was in Christchurch presenting a project report. Thanks Andrew.
Kyle has completed a tour of summits in Auckland and Waikato in late December collecting a total of 11 points. John ZL1BYZ has toured Northland summits collecting 4 activator points during the trip to add to his other activations during the month totaling 15. Wynne ZL2ATH has added 8 activator points to his log but sadly had activation where he failed to make the 4 contacts required to claim the point for ZL1/ WL-103. Reasons for this can vary but include equipment trouble, poor weather or propagation, time constraints or lack of internet connectivity. To help prevent this occurring it is wise to have a ground watch (maybe via a local repeater) to rally contacts, and if the summit has been activated before check with them to be prepared. It can be sole destroying to leave a summit with out 4 contacts in the log.
A particular interesting activation this period came from ZL2MNB Matt who announced he would be activating the Pinnacles ZL1/WK-060 with a VHF handheld radio only. Obtaining 4 contacts with a VHF handheld can be tricky. Especially with a remote summit in the Coromandel ranges. A few of us decided to get up summits ourselves to assist Matt in making his 4 contacts. Myself at ZL1/BP154 near Rotorua, John ZL1BYZ and Jacky ZL1TZW at Puketutu ZL1/WK-158 and John ZL1po at Pukemako (Sanatorium) ZL1/WK-153 managed to give Matt his 4 contacts (all summit to summit). But in the setting up of this, we managed to entice a few others (ZL2KGF, VK3ARR, VK1MA) up summits to collect a few Summit to summit contacts. This was an enjoyable session and we were pleased to be able to help Matt out with his first activation as well as collect a few extra summit to summit points for our own logs.
New year’s activations included John ZL1BYZ at Karioi ZL1/WK-063, Wynne ZL2ATH at Moraonui ZL1/WK-036 and myself at Taraponui ZL1/HB-020. It wasn’t the nicest day for weather or RF so many of my contacts were made with VHF however this was enough to activate the summit twice (once for each UTC year). New year’s day has a special place in SOTA, especially in New Zealand where UTC rollover occurs at 1pm on New year’s day. What this means is if you can collect 4 contacts or more before and after 1pm you can claim twice the points for a single ascent, as each activation is in a different UTC year. As such with many activators out attempting to collect double points, many summit to summit contacts are up for grabs during this period. Spare a thought for the British where UTC rollover occurs at midnight! Likewise, for other parts of the world. Here in New Zealand we are lucky with our timing.
Chasing activity has been heavy in November December with a total of 447 chased contacts. ZL1BYZ’s callsign seems to be appearing in many logs and blog postings around the world. Well done John. You are well on your way to becoming a super shack sloth (10 000 chaser points) having obtained 4381 chaser points to date.
I have been invited onto the SOTA Management Team to assist with SOTA at an international level. I look forward to putting my skills and time into assisting SOTA internationally. In particular, I hope to assist new associations enter the SOTA award scheme.
Unfortunately, the activation list above is not complete for some reason as it appears some activations entered in the last few days of December or early January have not been listed. This includes several activations by Kyle ZL2KGF and all the new year’s day activations. I have raised this with SOTA incase it is a bug they are not aware of, but rest assured your activations are recorded in the database correctly.

SOTA ON TOP BAND - Mark G0VOF
Hello everyone & welcome to this month’s edition of SOTA on Top Band.
I have a little more activity to report this month, & as this is the last edition of the year some statistics as well.
At the time of writing there were 4 activations during December, with a 5th pending as I write this. The First activation took place on 1st December when John G4YSS (using GX0OOO/P) activated G/NP-003 Burnhope Seat as part of a two summit day out. As John was on this summit shortly after sunrise he started on 160m CW to make the most of conditions. He was rewarded with 2 QSO’s on CW & 2 on SSB with 4 unique stations, thereby qualifying the summit on Top Band.
The second activation came in the afternoon of the 1st when John G4YSS activated his second summit of the day G/NP-007 Wild Boar Fell. Top band was left to the end on this one to take advantage of improved conditions after sunset & John was this time rewarded with 3 QSO’s on CW & 5 QSO’s on SSB again qualifying the summit on 160m. Unfortunatly for me I was involved with our annual stocktake at work so missed both of these activations.

G4YSS: G/NP-003, G/NP-007 on 01-12-16
The third activation this month, was also carried out by John G4YSS (using GX0OOO/P) although this one was not originally planned. On 18th December John’s original plan had been to activate 3 summits G/NP-013, G/NP-019 & G/NP-018 using only VHF FM, however an equipment failure on G/NP-013 meant that his last summit would only be QRP VHF only activation. Due to the remoteness of the summit John didn’t want to risk an activation using such limited equipment so decided to pack his HF QRO equipment instead. This of course meant a session on Top Band could be included at the end of the activation. Part way through John’s session on 80m SSB I received an email from Roy G4SSH alerting me that John was planning Top Band at the end of the activation so I got permission to leave work & raced home on my motorbike. I was home in 15 minutes & found John just finishing on 1832KHz CW, before he then QSY’s to 1843 KHz SSB. John was easy copy on both modes, despite some QRM on his SSB frequency. John made 4 QSO’s on CW & 7 QSO’s on SSB as by now the sun had well & truly set.
John’s descent from this summit was very eventful & his activation report is well worth reading!
G4YSS: NP13, NP19, NP18 on 15-12-16
The fourth activation this month took place on 17th December when Axel DM2AXL/P tried out a long wire antenna from DM/BM-174 Platte. His fist QSO was with SA4BLM on 1985KHz before he moved up the spectrum to work some DX.
The 5th activation took place on 31st December when John G4YSS did an overnight activation of G/NP-010 Pen-y-ghent. Currently I don’t have any data for this activation although I know John qualified the summit on 160m both sides of midnight thereby earning two sets of activator points & winter bonus points.

Top Band was tried from a total of 26 different summits by 8 activators. The table below shows all successful activations at the time of writing:
The band was also tried by Heinz HB9BCB & Jan OK2PDT but without success, but as activating on Top Band is a challenge in itself, well done both for trying.

CW REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2016 - Roy G4SSH
The first weekend of Winter Bonus saw many activations on the air as stations took advantage of the extra bonus points on offer. Geert was on the air from Belgium as ON/PA7ZEE and also from France as F/PA7ZEE and John GX0OOO activated some G/NP summits on the lower bands.
CW Activity for the remainder of the month dropped to a very low level, probably as a result of strong winds/rain, poor propagation conditions, short hours of daylight and the fact that December was a peak month for contests, with 7 and 14 MHz being almost unworkable for SOTA stations at weekends. However, during the first half of the month there was activations from Zoli HA/YO2BP in Hungary, Manuel OE/HB9DQM in Austria, Hans DL/PB2T in Germany, Tonnie ON/PA9CW in Belgium, and Marko OH9XX who remarked that it was “Vy windy with temp -27c” at his location.
Heinz reports being active as EA8/OE5EEP from Gran Canaria Island from Dec 4 to Dec 11. He activated a total of 7 summits and by now has uploaded GPS-tracks and tour descriptions of all these summits to the SOTA Mapping Project. Propagation conditions were mixed. The strongest signals from Europe usually were EA, G/GM or Scandinavian stations. In the afternoons chasers from North America, especially on 15m and 17m, took over. For anybody going to EA8 I recommend to take a vertical for one of these bands in addition to a multi-band dipole. (Tnx Heinz).
Manuel HB0/HB9DQM was in Liechtenstein, Stephan OE/DM1LE was in Austria and Karoly YO/HA8BJ and Feri YO/HA8LLH were in Romania.
John GX0OOO started another round of G/NP summits on 2m FM only, but rig failure forced a return to his car for reserve HF CW equipment (see “Top Band report”).
Special call SO9TA was aired by Sergiy over the weekend of the 18th, Matt was in Lichtenstein as HB0/HB9FVF,and also OE/HB9FVF was active from Austria. Zoran was active as E70AA from Sarajevo in Bosnia, a rare call from a SOTA activator.
On the run up to Christmas David GM0EVV was active from the summits in the GM/SS region of Scotland, using his trade-mark spot frequency of 5.381.5 MHz.
Matt returned to Austria on the 23rd, activating summits as OE/HB9FVF/P, and Feri
YO/HA8LLH/P was active from Romania with Karcsi YO/HA8BJ.
Christmas Day saw Bob EA8/F5HTR active from Fuertevenetura Island in the Canary Islands, Zoran active from Bosnia as E70AA again and Angel active from Spain as EA/M0HDF, accompanied by Guru EA2IF.
Special call S5100SF was again active from Slovenia over the Christmas weekend, Markus was active from Germany as DL/HB9BRJ and Bob EA8/F5HTR continued to call from the Canary Islands during the last week of the year.
The last week also saw activity from France by Kurt as F/HB9AFI, Hans DL/PB2T from Germany, Joaquim EA1/CT7AGT was in Spain and Andy CT9/HB9JOE was in Maderia.
