Sota - dm/bw

In reply to DF2GN:
Hi, Klaus!
Pretty hard effort… I will try to be qrv on friday to make the 30->14 qsy spots. I don’t think that I would be able to hear you on 24 but I will try vía some websdr far enough
73 and good luck.

Hi Klaus,

Good luck with the 3 or 4 summits tomorrow. I will be listening for you on 24.965 and 14.330 +~ and if I hear you I will spot you on SOTAwatch if you have not already being spotted.

hi, thanks for listening for me
in moment i work on the routes around dm/bw-314. not sure ever activated on ssb before. today its snowing and i hope the hikes tmrw don´t are to hard. if too much snow on the summits i will cancel tmrw. the qrg s are in that row :
24.097cw,24.965ssb,10.122cw,14.330ssb all plus minus qrm. if 30m is bad, i try 7 or 14mhc cw…only short activations with a quick run over the bands…its winter now

see you tmrw…klaus df2gn/p

In reply to DF2GN:
Hi Klaus,
I am planning to be at VK1/AC-008 on our Saturday night, staying overnight for a VHF field day contest. I will take my SOTA gear and a 20m antenna and will look out for you if you are activating any time from 0500 Saturday (4pm local time) through to 2300 (10 AM Sunday local).

I will check the alerts and spots and at that site I should have fair 3G coverage.
CW and SSB both OK for me. I will be operating as VK1DA/p.

Hi Andrew,

12 Metres was too long for me to hear Klaus in the UK this morning but I did manage to work him on 30m & 20m. Just as he was about to go QRT on 14.330 SSB he was called by VK3DET which was a nice surprise, Klaus was running QRP from his KX3 into a short vertical!

Also heard a few G chasers on 20m, which is unusual. Don G0RQL in Devon was 58 here in Blackburn, as was Colin G4UXH in Cumbria

Good conditions on the HF bands today & I have the day off work:)

Thanks & 73,

Mark G0VOF

In reply to G0VOF:
Hi Mark,
conditions are quite interesting on the higher bands. That would have been quite late at night for Ernie, but it’s always great to work an activator at this distance. I have listened for US activators around 1900-2000 but can only hear the stations working them. Bigger and higher antenna needed here.

Just for info…@1755UTC at the carpark again.thnks all who called in…later more.now on the way home…cu 73

Hello Klaus, I listened out today for you on all summits/bands - sorry but today must have been an RF hole where I am 8( Perhaps next time!
Best wishes

In reply to G6TUH:
hi mike,
sorry to hear that you are listening for me…no copy here. signals are great on the first two activations from uk. but very “spoty”…some stations with s9+30db,others very weak…

hope work you next time again !

hi all and thanks for calling in today on my little summit tour ( first winter activations in the snow )on dm/bw-313,314 and 536. 10,6 and 4 points. by the way, the 6 pointer was the hardest work today in a mix of rain and snow on a muddy trail.
350km by car.seems that the points nothing say about the difficultly to reach the activation zone…30mins by car between the summits and abt. 60mins one way walking by the summits .
had 144 nice qsos with very small rig today. kx3 with small antenna. think best qsos are vk3det with 579 on my meter and 4time s2s with sv2oxs/p and sv2oye/p on sv/mc-077…078.
the last summit today bw-536 i only activated due to the long drive. normal not. on the half way up i was so late in time that i thinked to break up…but. no problem … a good headlight and two led lenser with me
today it was the first tour in the winter again. but never missed the feeling if my very cold finger warms up in the car after the hike down…ooouch

24,14 and 10mhz was a good choice for these quick activations i think. nice to be called by so much eu chasers. also nice to work the dx and na on 12m.
a good mix…
a fantastic feeling sometimes these qrp-ing…on the last summit bw-536 my antenna was a piece of wire from 5mtrs abt. 2mtrs over ground. good enough to work some chasers from na. overall the kx3 does a great job today also on 20m ssb with his 30db comp and high audio boost. received great reports with my 10watts.
sorry to have so less groundwave chasers in the log today .most hb9 regulars are missed. i was on the west side of the black forest on lower summits. so maybe my qrp sigs don t make the way over the much more higher summits to hb9.

in my next activations i go also for lower bands now in winter time. i will call on 12m as mostly, but i not staying to long. i will shorten the operating time on 12m to give also eu chasers the chance to grab some points in the same time a longer 12m band activation takes. a good deal
lets look how my lowband antennas work on 12m. but i will do also some activations on 10 and 15m next time with the focus on dx.

but in moment i like it also to go out with small antennas with a really quick setup and good enough to work many chasers.
next two weeks i m off from work and lets see where i go next  by too bad wx i go out maybe for a few wff references in dm/bw…

-cq NA : whos the first na contact on 80m band ? is around 7utc a good time or too late ? 160 and 80m are the two bands i never worked a na chaser.and now i have two weeks off from work…

greetings and thanks a nice day with very good pile ups and fb and very quick qso procedure.

hi Andrew,
lets look how i have time or the wx is at the weekend. maybe i went to a local summit with a delta loop or halfwave vertical. think my moxon is no good idea in winter time. to much work to setup. 20m is a good choice i think. 30 and 20m works at best for me to vk,zl…

Hope you have fun in the vhf contest. After a longer break i am again in my old contest team to do the cw work, most times at night on the look for the odx and dx on vhf.but they dont use real qrp rigs

vy 73 and enjoy your weekend

Klaus,

thanks for todays new unique Summit -> DM/BW-074 (Hohenkarpfen)
Worked you today on my favorite ( 30 mrt ) band with a great signal.

CUAGN, 73, Tonnie PA9CW.

In reply to PA9CW:
I heared you on the pile-up, Tonnie! I worked Klaus on 10Mhz too…

This could be politically incorrect, but… I hate -as chaser- 24 Mhz as much as I like 10Mhz!!!

Thanks a lot, Klaus!

In reply to EA2CW:

That’s OK Mikel  24MHz seems the right thing to do at the peak of a solar cycle. Not everyone wants to play on 24MHz so the next challenge will be different. I don’t know what it will be and we’ll discuss ideas in the Spring.

Hi Tonnie, Mikel…also thanks for your calls  Nice to have you in my log.
i also like 30m very much…good for all, working europe,dx…
Tonnie, tmrw or in two days i´m on dm/bw-845, also on 30m cw. maybe a new unique for you ?
Today i was longer on the air as planned. the -4°C and little wind doing its work after 2 hours of operating. the point as the finger or the toes start to hurt, is the time to go qrt. that was after 1,5h…
today i testet my finaly winter rig. kx3 with small lifepo4 accu. antenna was a 2x10m doublet as inv.v. in a tree with 15m of 300ohm feeding line. so with the auto tuner i can work all bands from 10-40m without problems. output from 5-10wtts. the second antenna for real quick ones is the mp1 antenna. but i more like the doublet. i have a second 15m piece of feeding line with me. and if wx is not to cold and i feel for more dx i can shot the antenna more up in a high tree…up to 30m. but today only at 15m high. seems the antenna works also well on higher bands.15m works perfect today for na west coast, and so i spent only a few minutes on 12m to give out some points in the challenge.but i think i´m more on 15 and 17m to work dx. if conditions good, i start on 12m.
in moment i think about how to work as much chaser in less time. goal is to work dx and eu…cw and ssb…
so…maybe starting on :

-15m (12m ) band for dx. on cw i hope on the rbn catching me, on ssb i call around 21.330 ±10 after cw. so i hope chasers find me, its no fun to send spots at all with cold finger

next band is :

20m for ssb chasers, for eu at daytime very good with good signals also from uk.later then also good for dx. cw is not sure on 20m, depends on time and wx…

then 30m cw , followed by 40m cw… if its later in the afternoon i do no more 40m ssb with my qrp rig. first you need a lot of time to find a free spot–then you can fight against a net who own´s the qrg ( ok, only sometimes
) and the qrm level makes it not easy on ssb 40m later the day.maybe i go out sometimes in winter with my hf packer amp, then i give also ssb a try on 40m. today it worked good on ssb around 1300utc with only 10wtts.
i have done one good 160m activation this month.mhhh, in moment i think over 160/80m only if i do the next one. winter, cold…don´t do so much night activations, and if - then only a few bands with a quick contest mode…anyone try´ed 160m nvis at daytime with qrp ?

to work the pile ups in the moment makes really fun. very quick qso´s…thanks for that in cold winter days…

hope work you on the next summit

Klaus,

Yes, dm/bw-845 would be a new unique for me. Hope to catch you on 30 mtrs.

Mikel,

12 mtrs is not my favorite band. 0 QSO’s made this year. 30 mtrs is my favorite!

73, good luck. PA9CW, Tonnie

In reply to PA9CW:

12 mtrs is not my favorite band. 0 QSO’s made this year.

It’s been an interesting band for me this year, with 78 QSOs so far. Of those, 42 (all SSB) were in one pile-up from Kenya in January. All the rest have been SOTA QSOs, 7 (1 CW, 6 SSB) from summits, and 29 (8 CW, 21 SSB) chases including my first NA chase. Some of them were shorter skips probably thanks to sporadic E.

30 metres doesn’t work so well for me because the antenna I’ve got has to be pushed to tune on it, and the noise floor’s not great, but I’ll give it a listen…

73, Rick M0LEP

In reply to M0LEP:

30m is an interesting and fun band. When we were considering the challenge, 30m was a possibility. However, we discounted it at the time as it was regularly in use by activators. More importantly, the bandplans preclude SSB in most of the world so it would make the challenge unavailable to many who cannot do CW. We do try to be inclusive on the MT.

The thing I liked about 30m CW was the fact you were never sure just who would call you. Obviously there was overlap with 40m but there was always something more distant to work. My antenna was a low mounted inverted V and that is a lot less of an omni than a low mounted 40m inverted V. But it’s not a DX antenna. It was interesting, to me, to see the more distant Europeans and nearer former Soviet countries appear in the 30m log.

Coming back to Klaus’ regular reports, I’m fascinated by his reports because of the many antennas he tries. It clearly shows that the antenna “maketh the activation”. However Klaus, you are lucky you have so many summits with trees so you hang bigger antennas higher up. Few Scottish summits have trees, just wild moorland, rocks, peat and heather (and wild WX), so an antenna support has to be carried.

Indeed. I need to experiment more…

rocks, peat and heather (and wild WX), so an antenna support has to be carried.

…and firmly secured to the summit if you don’t want it blown away.
