Hi Klaus!

Congratulations on all your FB activations … mostly 8 and 10 pointers!

I have one question. How do you get your antennas so high? Often you are using an antenna 18m above the ground. Surely you do not climb the tree to fix the antenna to the top? Do you shoot the wire over the tree-top with a bow and arrow?

The maximum antenna height I have managed on my activations is only 7m.
:frowning:

In reply to G3NYY:
Hi Walt, yes…8-10 Pointers, but not hard to climb. Most of them are easy and good for “daily” activations, also with a bit bigger rig. but not all…
Therefor i try to work many chasers with bigger antennas and on some summits i´m more than 20 times a year,so i don´t go for points. my sota is to work as many chasers as possible  ok ok, most times, sometimes i´m looking only for dx and monoband…

The good and bad thing on the summits here…90% are with deep forest on the top. so its hard to find a spot with a good take off to NA…but the positive thing…many many high trees
To get the antennas up…no problem  i´m also in treeclimbing and also go for friends to get some T5 Geocaching, so the equipment is here. Most times i use special ropes and … ( oh, my english…no words for that i´m using )
up to 15-20mtrs i need no special equipment, greater than 20m i use a bigshot.
i carry that instead a antenna pole.
no videos from me, but i found a few that seems ok and shows how i do that…

Maybe i choose DM/BW-845 or DM/BW-168,156 later. 40m is not sure, depends on start time and time is need for antenna setup. will try to get my 12m bisquare a bit higher. and if time i setup up a dipole for 40m as second antenna. the wx today is very very fine !

In reply to DF2GN:

Thanks, Klaus. That’s very interesting. I had not seen a slingshot (Big Shot) before!

With so many trees nearby, I would think it’s a problem when your wires and ropes get tangled in the branches!

Good luck with your antenna experiments. I’ll be listening for you. Hope we will make an S2S QSO soon.

Walt (G3NYY)

In reply to DF2GN:
Hello Klaus,

Well done indeed on passing the 10k because you will have done after the efforts of today 8)

I think your energy, operating methods, KX3 and very good antenna do the job.

Best wishes

hi
just for info… the next weeks i stay on my local summits here around my qth.hope to work many stations all around also on the lower bands. some projects here…a folded vertical halfwave antenna for 40m that should work without counterpoise and only needs a 8-10m fishingpole to set up, a fullsize 2x40mtr dipole for all bands with feedpoint high as possible to test my new slingshot ;-), and i´m thinking about delta loops and oblongs…;-). will also try 160m again the next days but the night activations becoming more and more uncomfortable next weeks…seems it was more a fun in summer months. so thanks all again for quick qso mode !! we can ragchew again in summer

vy 73 and hope to work you from the summits

Its always a pleasure to put your callsign in my log and confirm another contact with you Klaus. So you know, I am always QRP on my side (activating and chasing) so that means you have very good ears to hear my QRP KX3. Here are to many many more contacts between us.

Storm - DF2GN/p 1:0

Hi all,
today i tested my new wire antenna, better say i want to test it
It takes over 1 hour time to set up in very windy/storm conditions.
so the set up was not real finished after this long time and i used the
antenna only as inv.V. with 2x30m with the feedpoint only at 18mtr over ground.
Nice to have markers on the feedline  The end of the antenna wires was only 1m over ground. Not ideal for higher bands, so i called only on 15m cw.
I wonder about the good signals on this band, good enough to make some 2way qrp qso´s
The test on 40 and 80m was ok ! good signals , on 80m stronger as on 40m.
Nice sigs from LA/OH/SM/I on 80m at afternoon !
Sorry for the requests on sotawatch, but i don´t read the spots by bad wx conditions.
but today the only reason for the quick qrt then on 80m was upcomming rain.
by this storm, the rain comes horizontal and then its difficult to protect the rig, write the log etc…so i go qrt after only 71 qso´s with so nice sigs on 80m…:frowning: to early for 160m by the way, i tried it but get no rbn spot.
hope on better wx tomorrow. maybe i go to a local summit like bw-156 or bw-228 and try to get the feedpoint higher as today, and then with a complete antenna

hi

i had worked now north america on all bands from 40m to 12m. today i try 10m.
hope for good condx. next week i will try 80/160m in early morning hours and i´m looking then for my first qso to NA on the 80m band. planned time is 0600-0700utc. a good time for try ? anybody out there listening for me ?
also other dx  and EU welcome
antenna is a inv.L. 30m vertical and 20m horizontal, or a T-antenna with vertical 26m and 60m horizontal.antenna setup is the late afternoon before…with a quick test
later i´m on dm/bw-228 on 10,12,15,17,20…80m with my new doublet. if time i switch it to a T-antenna at abt. 1600utc.but not sure…many work to lay all these radials out…

vy 73 Klaus…hope cu later

Klaus, good to work you on 15M CW again your antenna was doing a great job here into Virginia USA. Started off with a 559 signal but it increased to a good 589 with some QSB
Best 73 my friend and Good Luck
GL on the band. I do think that was the 24th time I have worked you there on the Summits in your country and Always enjoy working you on CW. Thanks for the Contact as always and thanks for the Chaser points.

Hi, thanks comments…also nice to work you all again
Back home from my local summit DM/BW-228 from a short afternoon activation
with 167 logged QSO´s. Antenna is working well. Sorry for not doing all bands, all modes…but too many chasers to work
10m working very well with very nice qso´s to NA. Nice band with a nice qso to a mobil station in ohio at the end. 40m was full of big signals ! the feedpoint of the antenna was at 25mtrs over the ground, but maybe a bit to high for closer EU QSO´s. At the end it was nice to have a s2s with WI2W on 14mhz. Not easy to work because i was at the last calls with the fullsize dipole ( 60m ) on 20m. there was not much time before sunset, so i decided not to let down the antenna to set the links for higher bands. rig today was the kx3, only on 40m ssb i used a small amp ( 30wtts ). not much in db, but sometimes very helpful…
and rbn ignored agn my cq´ing on 160m :frowning: maybe to early on the band…or the wrong antenna. dipoles are not high enough over ground. so next time i go again with my very well working inverted L antenna. so i split in future my activations in 40-10m and 160-80/40m. think the inverted L with a vertical part from over 20mtrs is not a burner on higher bands

so hope work you again on the bands

73 Klaus DF2GN/p

In reply to DF2GN:
Hi Klaus,
tnx for the discriptions of your impressive antenna installations! Did you exclusively use the Z-match for all your latest experiments, even for the vertikals an the big inverted V? edit: oops, just found the photo with your T1 tuner…
If your combi-antenna is configurated as delta loop, do you hoist up the delta in horizontal position (liegende loop)? On the flickr photo it seems to lay on a sloping level.

Which kind of wire do you use?

What kind of fishing pole did you use?

73 Wolfgang

In reply to DL1GWW:
Hi Wolfgang,
yes…Tuners are z-match,t1,fuchskreis qrp ag, c´s from coax-cable for longer wires, and so on. sometimes i add short peaces of ladderline in different lenghts to connect direct to the trx via 1:4 Balun with no tuner then. also often in use are linked dipoles via coax cable. but if the dipole 20m or higher above ground i prefer the tuning via ladder line
the loop on the photo is vertical. maybe its the position of the photo. never used horizontal loops before onb a summit.
for antenna experiments i use 0,5 - 0,75mm insulated wire…the cheap one  radials are from cheap 0,25mm insulated wire. for my inv.L. antennas i use around 2-3 mm wire for the radiator. i use a lot of wire in a few months, so i only buy these cheap pvc insulated wire…
for antennas i use longer i prefer the dx-wire fl.
fishings poles are from spiderbeam…the hd versions from 12-18m are only for easy summits with a short walk in. to heavy weight.
on 90-95% of my local summits are high trees…so i take a big shot ( slingshot ) with me  i build one myself for around 40 euros now from a ( wasserbombenschleuder und gardena zubehör ) that works very well up to 30…35m height.maybe i take some photos from the prototype  for my flickr account…
this weekend i haven´t much time for sota. maybe ? since a long time ago i´m again as cw operator in my old contest team DR5T and will do a bit activity in marconi vhf contest this weekend. maybe i do some UK contacts then from jn47et…
its colder now…often we have 0°C now on the summits, so will split my activations now often.
next one is to be on the air again with my inv.L. antenna on dm/bw-228 or bw-195. only summits i can do in darkness with a safe way down. 50m long radiator with a coaxial c´s and a variable L ( LC-homemade ).8 radials 20m, 4 radials 40m…or 4 times elevated radials…not sure yet. will take some photos. planned is activity on 160 and 80, maybe 40m with the focus on dx

if you have more questions you can write me directly via e-mail in german language…easier for me  e-mail is on qrz.com

vy 73 Klaus DF2GN/P

hi all,
this post is only a reminder about qso procedure…not the first time…
on my last activations i finished often with calls on 40m cw,
and my plans are to use better antennas for 40 and 30m on some of my
activations next time. 30m is a very good band to work zl,vk in late afternoon here. i think the signals with these antennas are not so good on higher bands then, but i will post in every comming activation my antenna setup in the alert.sometimes i use only a small mp1 vertical, it works…not so bad as i thinked before ;-)…
ahh, now just the reminder for qso procedure…or maybe a reminder that now is winter time here…! so please, its not fair if i go on 40m cw to work a lot of eu chasers and get replies with receiving the name 2times,my call,ur call more times etc… i know my name and most of the chasers. and i mean “not fair” because…its cold !!! on the summits now and its getting colder the next weeks. i don`t sit in a warm shack and looking for ragchewing in mid of a pile up. sri, for this, but i must say that now after the last 40m cw calls. remeber the frozen fingers of the op on the summit  pse !
so the next week i work only in contest style. if that works i have often time for 40m cw or ssb. and with a good antenna there are a lot of chaser to work  often there are over 50-70 chasers calling on 40m cw,but we can do all these qsos in a short time, especially in cw …

vy 73 es hope cu on the summits

klaus df2gn/p

In reply to DF2GN:
Ok Klaus, no names…hihi No problem with contest-styl.

Tks for the QSO’s on 1.837 mhz with 100w and later with my new KX3!(10 w out) You also copy the 10 watt. You have very good antennes for RX and transmitting! Nice signals! Tks.

In reply to DF2GN:
Klaus,

very good point - fast qsos mean more chaser points and less frost on the hands of the activator!

Your signal on 20m this morning was good. Looked for you on 30m but it was full of dxpedition pileups around 10.120-125 and some fax/garbage wide signals. Looked around and worked an IS0 but nil hrd from you.

VK1DA/VK2UH

In reply to PA0SKP:
hi Sake,
no problem with names  but not 3 times  think most chasers know what i mean in my last post. also today i had enough time to doing longer qso´s today with exchanging rig, antenna infos etc. its more for my 40m activations with good eu proagation with a lot of chasers calling, then its better to do the contest style.
your signal was very good on all bands…no big difference between 10 and 100watts.a bit funny. 160m is very interesting. at your first call you was 559 and later then with qrp your peaking 579… maybe the mojo in your kx3

so hope to work you again !

73 klaus df2gn/p

In reply to VK1DA:
also very nice to have a call from you. everytime something special to get calls from vk,zl…
and my antenna was not the best for higher bands today, i wonder
yes, 30m was bad today. no rbn spot from zl2ham and full of pile ups…

thanks again !

73 klaus df2gn/p

hi all,
home again from another night activation on hummelsberg.yes, it was cold. but only abt. 0°C…with goog clothes no problem if wx is dry.
antenna today was a inv.L. with antenna wire lenght of abt.50m+5m 300ohm feeder (bad lenght, had problems with tuning later). vertical part was abt. 20m high i a tree. radials = 2x40m,2x20m,4x10m…
i wonder abt. my first calls on 24mhc with this antenna that was much to long for doing dx on this band. but good enough to make some qso´s to na and a few to uk with good signals. also had a nice s2s with tom mw1eyp/p on cw and ssb. at the end tom had a very good signal in ssb so i make some calls to get more uk stations in my log before qsy to lower bands. the same on 20m, also good for a bit of dx to na and a nice qso with vk2uh.
on 160m the antenna going very well with 31 qso´s on the top band at the end.
no dx, but band was very quiet and qso all over europe. first i want stay longer for the rsgb 160m test, but i made qrt before due to cold fingers and a waiting xyl at home…so better go home
also had done some qso´s on other bands 40 and 80m, but signals from closer stations around sounds weaker as normal on this antenna today…
planned from me was to repeat a 160m activation today on sunday…but…
better doing a xyl day today. before i went to bw-228 i sayd to xyl “i going for 1…2 hours to test a antenna” ok,ok…it was much later then  as allways  and maybe it is to cold now to do such activations daily…

so hope to see you again on the summit ( next week i work lateshift :frowning: )
thanks all who called in … dx and eu !

vy 73 klaus df2gn/p

hi all,
at friday the 22.nov. i go out to activate 3 or 4 summits in dm/bw area.
wx forecast is bad. so i´m qrv mostly qrp only with my kx3 and a small mp1 antenna. maybe a few summits never activated before in ssb. so on every summit i do a quick run on 3 bands. starting on 12m ( first cw , then 24.965±5 ), then qsy to 30m cw for eu and 20m for ssb chasers.about 30-60min operating time on every summit.
i don´t like to much selfspotting and its unsure i have gsm on all summits. so it would be nice someone can spot my qsy from 30m cw to 20m ssb. qrg is around 14330±10khc if qrm or qrg is in use. if wx better i´m qrv with a small doublet 2x7m. start time is around 8utc in the morning after a longer drive.i will set an alert before i´m at the first carpark.

next week i try another 160m night activation on bw-228,bw-157 or bw-042. three easy ones with a hut in the activation zone. other summits are bad now with no easy walk down in nighttime. safety first  maybe i try a multiband/multimode activation from time to time with bigger antennas  in winter time…

so cu on the summits, klaus df2gn/p
