SOTA app ??

Only just a question - is there any future plans of creating a SOTA app, for like IPhone and Android phones. Something very similar to the SOTA database, where instead of using the web browser, you can upload your logs through an app, see all the information you generally require, and visit maps etc etc….

I think this would be the icing on the cake…. please don’t shoot me down if this has already been spoken about, but I can’t see any past posts on it.

Honestly, your favorite browser on your mobile already is the SOTA app! It does all those things — uploads, maps, info — just without needing to install anything extra.

Do I miss something?

Not sure about Apple, Ben, however on android, I can save websites so they open like an app. I can also add them to my homepage.

If the websites are mobile phone friendly, then they look and behave just like an app when opened.

Or, is your question about One App to Rule them All?

I was on about one app to rule them all - but that’s cool that you can save them on your android like that. I don’t think you can using an iPhone?

That only works if the website is configured as a Progressive Web App (SOTLAS, SW are good). The way to do it on an Apple device:

  • Open the site up in Safari
  • Click the ‘3 dots’ menu then ‘Share’
  • Click ‘More’ (another ‘3 dots menu’)
  • Finally, click ‘Add to Home Screen’

Now you will have an ‘App’ on your homescreen that opens up and behaves like an app rather than a tab in Safari.

That’s the term I was looking for! Cheers.

Thanks Josh, I still can’t seem to find the ‘add to home screen’ option after doing what you suggested. I open the web browser, click on three dots, share, go to more, and I just have a list of my apps, nothing stating to ‘add to home screen’.

On my Android phone in Chrome I have several tabs that are always open so Sotawatch, SOTA reflector, SOTA database and Propquest are only a couple of touches away.

It works for me on iOS 26.0.1 using Safari.

Did you try adding SOTLAS using this method? I know for sure SOTLAS is a PWA.

On IOS 18, after clicking the share symbol scroll down to ‘Add to Home Screen’

So far all apps have failed in the longrun as they were kept closed source and the programmers lost interest (SOTA Activator, SOTA Spotter, SOTA Finder, Outdlog, …)

So if something is created please make it Open Source like PoLo. This will make it possible to keep it maintained on the longrun. And so far lots of functions like log upload are just not available via the API. So a “one for all SOTA” tool is not possible yet as far as I see.

Somewhat related but I was thinking it would be fun if an activator could upload a photo together with their spot. Then the chasers could see what it’s like and what’s going on.

Like spots they can be ephemeral and get discarded after a while.

So let’s call it “S’OTAnap spot chat” - hi

Also the APRS proximity alert like once created by Christoph ON6ZQ | SOTA2APRS

would be a nice feature. If one adds an APRS callsign in the alert text the alert view could track the distance and approximate ETA of the operator based on APRS data. So many options for fun experiments.

The GMA sends me messages via APRS when I get close to the summits I’ve alerted for. Definitely scope for something fun with APRS.

I get that too. No so fond of that. I think it is more relevant for chasers to see that. But anyhow on needs to wait for the spot.

You can turn these messages off by sending “WELCOME OFF” to “DL0QW-12”:

I have the Sotawatch webpage on my Android phone since Sota Spotter disappeared and it works very well most of the time. The only improvement I would like to see is that when self spotting on a summit the data that is not going to change, Callsign , SOTA Ref perhaps mode remains between spots so only need to edit qrg when changing bands (or mode). As it is having to re-enter all fields on each band change is a minor nuisance.

That would mean we’d actually have to start climbing the summits!

you should use SOTL.as instead of SOTAwatch
