I thought I’d share this, its my 2m flowerpot that Andrew, @G4VFL gave me a few years ago. It is extremely robust and has been smashed around Lakeland fells without breaking. a 40mph+ wind managed to break the short mast coupler that stopped my Robinson (G/LD-021) activation yesterday.
The mast is just 20mm conduit cut to fit into the rucksack and some 3d printed couplers. I guess I’ll print another coupler
. This gets an absolute hammering as well as the ground is almost always rocks and I like to make a small cairn to foot the mast when the weather is particularly “Cumbrian” (which is common)
Cheap, robust and a great performer. Highly recommended for 2m.

I wonder if it would be worth redesigning the couplers to have a flat cross section on part of the outer surface, printed lying on the flat side, with supports in the central hole.
If printed as above, the filament lines would run axially, preventing a reducing likelihood of the type you have seen.
I like the design…might use a shorter version to put an antenna on my pannier rack
This was my SOTA antenna yesterday at EA2/NV-042, where I was chased by someone in Alaska on 20m CW. His signal was strong and had an interesting and strong multipath echo.
Later, on 17m CW, I was chased by someone in California.
Sorry for not remembering their callsigns now, but I’m away from home typing this on my smartphone.
I was running 5W from my FT-817ND+mAT-10 antenna tuner.

i use a 10 foot whip with a center loading coil. The coil is tapped for different bands. It is clamped to my backpack
On 20M i use a 13 foot (longer for lower bands) drag wire for a counterpoise.
I saw your spot and hoped for other possible Alaska chasers coming in, but that was it.
But it was a real thrill!
Of course with a load resistor it has some loss, but there again mounting low to the ground introduces bigger losses! But the big advantage is set up takes 1 minute, I don’t need a tuner, and I don’t need to make adjustments to the antenna when changing bands. Frequency agility and quick set up is was I like as I only get very short sessions in.
Today, on an impromptu set up at Ditchling Beacon G/SE-006 in dense fog and rain I managed to log 9 great contacts in an hour in response to my CQs on 15m. The closest was just 21km away and the furthest was 6500km; not bad for 5W CW. I still got back to the car quick enough to go and pick my wife up from work at the hospital!

Normally Matthew its been fine. Some of the gusts were approaching 45-50mph so I’d expect it to have a bad day at that kind of loading. It is very weak in that plane in comparison. I could splash out and use proper couplers but I didn’t have any and orange ones are much nicer 
Since Covid hit I have been playing around a lot with antennas.
Here is my current EFHW for a KX2. It tunes all the bands the KX2 has, 49:1 auto-transformer using a non-standard size type 43 mix toroid and a 100pf cap with Sotabeams wire.

I could not agree more and as said earlier in this thread, I like the design, too. I appreciate your efforts to make it bulletproof and thight against all adverse effects like rain and wind. However, what I also like about the flowerpot antenna is, that it can be rolled up and transported easily. I use a 7 m fishing pole and simply stick it through the coil. The pole is made of fiberglass and it has actually no effect on the resonance frequency. As you can see from the photos below, the antenna top is fixed to the mast tip by means of a bit of fishing line and shrink tube. [Discard my red “wind indicator”, this has no function in the antenna design.

Well, not my idea, the “portable” version is already described in the original publication. https://vk1nam.wordpress.com/2018/02/10/portable-2m-144-mhz-coaxial-dipole-antenna/ I just added my two cents by concluding that a flexible wire and bending fishing pole would be better in strong wind than a ridgid plastic pipe that provides more surface area for attack. Not really a big deal. ![]()
Anyhow, good is, whatever suits your needs and this is what counts. I am relatively new to 3D printing, using predominantly PLA as filament. This seems to be pretty “hard”. Maybe, PA or something “softer” might be a better choice for the connectors. Just another thought that came into my mind when I read your report. Good luck with your repair job and many more successful activations with your flowerpot antenna!

Just about a year ago I worked you S2S on a Saturday (24 April 2021, 16:28 UTC.) You were on LUM/PC-049. I was on W7N/ES-087.
Were you using that antenna then?
I was using a vee beam that happened to be oriented towards Argentina.
I also used it just two days ago in the PNW and JA SOTA/S2S party event. This time, it was oriented towards PNW, JA and Taiwan.
Here is a photo. I had just set it up. In the background you can see three poles holding up the legs.
I hope to work you again sometime!

I have a couple of options for HF. I alternate between a fishing pole/linked dipole 20/40m and a Super antenna. As a lot of people use the linked dipole I wont go into that, but I do think the SuperAntenna deserves a mention. When packed it is actually lighter than my linked dipole set up. I know some people will argue it is a compromise solution, but for me it is a compromise that works. It is versatile, i can use it on multiple bands from 10/40m and everything inbetween. It is more stealth on a summit and is much faster to set up. It also works well on rocky summits, as it doesnt need guying down. It copes with high winds better than the linked dipole as well.On a recent activation on Moel Siabod I got 27 QSOs with 14 S2Ss so pretty happy. I should thank Mark M0MON for putting me onto it.
