I spotted Colwyn @MM0YCJ on GM/WS-256 today, and had a fine summit-2-summit while on GM/SI-040 Cruach Chorieadail on Mull.
I was a bit shocked to find out this was only a 2 pointer, as I knew Colwyn was working on finishing the 4 pointer summit in GM …and now I know why…
Huge congratulations to Colwyn @MM0YCJ, who completed all the GM 4-point summits and above on 12th October from GM/WS-137.
Having climbed a few myself, and knowing just how remote and committed some of the these summits are, combined with the awful weather Scotland can throw at you, this is a serious achievement.
Its allot of peaks, 531 in total with some GM stats (courtesy of @GM5ALX)
4-point: 305
6-point: 118
8-point: 73
10-point: 35
Total = 531 summits (4 points and above)
Thanks also for the S2S on 12/12/2025, my first winter bonus points this season. Once I had finally written your summit ref down (wind noise), I thought that the Andre Saunders award 2025 might now be a foregone conclusion, although with 15 days to go this year, there are still a few folk in the frame!
My achievement of successfully activating all of the Scottish 4, 6, 8 and 10 point summits, from 17 January 2011 to 12 October 2025, is an unintended consequence of my decision to follow MM0DHY (Adrian @MM0DHY), never a good idea, especially on a hill! Like Adrian, I only log my first activation of each summit. As I have mentioned previously, this was a very good motivator, but now it feels like a bit of a curse. It got me out to some parts of Scotland I had not seen since my first round of the Corbetts, completed in my pre-radio licence days.
I have to thank all of the unique 4342 Chasers who were essential in helping me get to this unique milestone, you all know who you are and I could not have done it without you, thank you.
Tim states that the feat comprised 531 summits, but SOTA logs tell a somewhat different story! It appears that I have been on the hills for so long that I had to activate 534 summits to tick them off. I can recall two of the three extra summits (as I write the third escapes me, must be my age), the two were Corbetts that were re-surveyed (GM/WS-348 and GM/ES-088). If anyone chooses to tread this same path, not something I would necessarily recommend, you will have a marginally easier time of it!
I have no intention of doing all of the remaining Scottish summits, no doubt I’ll be up some of them so please keep replying to my CQ calls. Thanks to everyone for their help, companionship and especially to my wife who usually accompanies me on these aimless quests, but sometimes leaves me to it!
I know the value of adequate footwear. To quote Dr W Schol (Schol sandals fame, but please not on hills!) “Feet are the foundation of our mobility, and caring for them is the cornerstone of a healthy, active life."
Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time (Wright).
Absolutely astounding! So that’s a round of the Corbetts and you are well on with a round of the Grahams…… maybe there is a “sensible” target…. finish the 2pt summits that are 600m and above to compleat (sic) the Grahams?
Easy for me to suggest of course
It was lovely to have the accidental meet up in EA8/TF! I’ll be in the Galloway hills at the end of January. Maybe see you both?
Yes, I am likely to activate The Grahams (Scottish hills between 600 and 762 metres in height) but not as a mission. In fact I’ll be ticking off Scottish peaks over 500m while the winter bonus applies!
We won’t see you at the end of January as hopefully we will be skiing (and activating) in France. Plenty of 4, 6, 8 and 10 pointers left for me to do there!
once again your innocent comment has caused me to seek the answer. If my excel skills are correct it appears that I have done 158 of the 295 Scottish 2 point summits, so over half already (53.6%). I still have no intention of trying to complete them!
I have activated all of the summits in the Cairngorm National Park as well, even the 2 pointers! Did you not live there until recently?
Also found I have 16 summits where I scored nul points; fewer than 4 QSOs I think, an average of just over one a year but not all in Scotland!
Might be up north at New Year if the forecast is OK, otherwise France at the end of January if the weather and snow are kind!
