RE-SCHEDULED GM/ES Winter Activity Day Friday 6th March 2026

Centred around Braemar, all welcome. Activations in the morning (1030), then a meet up for tea and medals at The Bothy (1330) Braemar, in the afternoon.

Last year we enjoyed almost snow free hills and a cool, crisp and sunny day. I’m not sure how this year will pan out, given recent freezing temperatures and snowfall every day since New Year.

Let me know if you want to come up. Also let me know if you’re up for some summit to summit action from another region.

Time to get some 2m SSB points. No idea how many of course but some!

Sounds most excellent! I shall venture north to the Shire at first light, after second breakfast, of course. I’d like a bit of S2S Corbett wizardry too, provided I can make it back home in time to put my feet up, smoke my pipe, and tell everyone it was a terribly dangerous adventure. :man_mage::snow_capped_mountain::radio:

If the weather turns foul, I’ll simply tell myself it’s all part of the quest and that there’s the fellowship waiting at the Prancing Pony aka The Bothy to share in this most adventurous of quests ! :ring:

As you’ve slept past first breakfast.

These Activity days are Double Mast days. One for 2m and one for HF  Apart from all the completes, apart from meeting people you only see online, apart from running a dual mast activation, it was worth last time for a pleasant lunch and coffee.

WX here in the Central Belt at 165m ASL: 1cm of snow overnight, melting and now drizzle/sleet.

It was a hoot from Arthur’s seat last year, I’ll see what I can organise for this year.

I probably won’t make it up to meet folks for tea and medals but look forward to some s2s like last time.

Summit picture from yesterday’s activation on Black Hill GM/SS-167 in the Pentlands.

I thought I would get ahead of the curve and book a summit first… but there were 3 ahead of me already

Last time I was up GM/CS-077… along time back almost no grey. Now the grey is white :frowning:

Booked. Unfortunately I’m on call the night before, so I hope the phone signal is good in Ballater. Look forward to meeting some of the faces behind the calls (whether they be clean shaven, ginger, brown, grey or white).

I think now is a great time to remind everyone of the true extent of ES, in the officially recognised hills of ES list as anointed by the leader, whose powers recently include deleting WhatsApp messages that are unabidable.

Great news and look forward to the event. Based on recent weather I’ll try to stay close to the A9 with The Fara WS-109 or Beinn Dearg CS-023 likely candidates.

I will have 2m FM & SSB 70cm FM & SSB and my updated 817 that now covers the full 40m allocation.

If on the above summits it’s not likely I will make Braemar after but if the weather nearer the date looks good for road access I could try a summit in ES and make the Bothy to thaw out post activation.

I can’t make ito to ES for this one but I will endeavour to get up a hill somewhere in SW.

I will have to pin a medal on myself afterwards

I’ll be interested to hear what the conditions are like on Ben Gulabin Andy. Thinking of doing it on my way home. Just need to find something for the way up now..

I remember it as being reasonably easy even though there was quite a bit of snow when I last did it March 2011 (hence the dark coloured hair and beard!) The computer says 443m ascent 2.7km walking and 1hr20 ascent time.

If you are driving up and down the A93 then you can look at Hill Of Persie GM/CS-116. There’s a big layby at the foot of the simplest route, 206m ascent, 1.7km walking and 40m to the top.

Thanks. I was looking at Meall Mor GM/ES-058 (in the interests of winter bonus!). It’s going to depend on when I get away and travel time etc. It’s over 4 hours driving to there. I might look a bit further south for the northward ascent

Maybe Scald Law with an option on Black Hill

That’s a brilliant wee walk but I’ve not done it since they started harvesting the forests but…

172m ascent 1.5km walking 35mins.

Hi Fraser, this sounds like a fun SOTA day out not to be missed.
As the 9th to pick a summit, I plumped for GM/ES-036, the most easterly summit ALERTed so far !
Looking forward to it !

I’ll join in from Allermuir GM/SS-171 with MM0RTO this year. We should be able to get reasonable reception from there to GM/ES.
