RadCom GW SOTA

I’d just like to thank Allan @GW4VPX for his excellent report of the GW SOTA event in this month’s RadCom magazine.

The article is lively and fun and certainly paints a very good picture of the GW SOTA S2S and Hog Roast event.

Thanks Allan, great job!

I’ll be back in 2025 with XYL and dog Pippa in tow. Pippa has already done one activation, albeit it was a drive on G/TW-005 on Wednesday…

Well done Ben and team, Richard GB4HOG and Allan for the excellent article and publicity.

Yes Rick, that was a nice surprise an FT8 2 way S2S on 10m band, very thrilled with that QSO!

And were you not thrilled with a 10m RockMite S2S from Birks Fell?

Now that you ask Colin, for me an FT8 S2S is rarer than a CW S2S, this FT8 was sweet as it was my very first one (It was only my second activation using FT8). I had no idea you were using the Rockmite - what power? Maybe 2 watts against my 75 watts maybe.

Thanks to G/TW-005 being a drive on I was able to use my camping table with Yaesu FT-710 and 18 AH LiFePo gold trolley battery, with an OCFD inverted vee for 40-10m mounted on a 10m pole. Last visit to G/TW-005 for me was in May 2006.

My lugholes just scraped your signal out of the 10m white noise, albeit on 28074 it was full of signals!

Yes, your guess is around right, ~2 watts from the RockMite and amp on 10m. I was using a 3S lipo for power, which is lower on voltage than the 4S LiFePO4 that I tend to use. I think I get around 2.5 watts out with the higher voltage.

I was pretty made up when you called me, making QSOs on the RockMite 10 is a pretty hard thing to do and to get an S2S was special!

At the moment the RockMite is my only option for 10m, besides my heavy FT-817. I do quite fancy obtaining a QRP Labs QMX, which should do the job quite nicely. I’ve been holding off getting a QMX until the bugs have been have been worked out. It seems as though the QMX is slowly maturing.

Hi Phil

I was using a QMX with mini PA, around 35W, using FT8CN on my Android phone, together with a flowerpot vertical.
The QMX seems a bit deaf on 10M receive so the outgoing reports tend to be a bit low
It was a verticals-only day as the top of the hill was very heavily populated !

Cheers

Yes a good article and leads to a weird statistic.

3% of my activations have resulted in a picture with me in it appearing in Radcom
