PSA: potamap.us now includes SOTA summits

I’ve recently started getting into POTA as well as SOTA (ever since they upped their web interface to be almost as good as SOTA, hi). So now I’m always on the lookout for SOTA summits that are inside the bounds of POTA entities. Determining the actual boundaries of POTA entities can be tricky where I live; my favorite tool for this is potamap.us. Sadly it is USA-specific, but otherwise it’s great. And it just got even greater, because now in addition to POTA entities, it also displays SOTA summit positions! Hooray! All credit to @N9FZ, and a big thanks as well, since they implemented my FR despite not even being very active in SOTA

Very nice mapping with POTA parks well defined in extent. I was a little bit concerned not to see any SOTA summits when I clicked the “Summits” checkbox, and tried a couple of different regions. I’ve discovered that the summits do appear, but only when the user has zoomed in to a sufficient degree; perhaps they could be colored to reflect the summit points?

Cainan N9FZ is to be congratulated on having made a fine tool. Hopefully, he may extend coverage to other areas/continents as time goes by.

Thanks Alex (and @N9FZ), a very useful tool for sure.

I note that some of the mapping boundaries look a bit odd, so for example the map shows Saddle Peak W6/CT-274 as being only in POTA US-0648:

But it looks like this SOTA is also part of US-1169:

Malibu Creek State Park

Is it possible to show this, or is the park information incorrect itself?

I’m interested in this one particularly, because I was hoping to activate it when I visit LA in a few weeks’ time.

Here’s another similar example:

Alcatraz Island US-7888 is a POTA itself, but on the mapping I can only see the wider Golden Gate Recreation Area, not the Alcatraz park map (which I appreciate is likely to be just the island, but I hope you can see my point  ):

Thanks & 73, Simon

It can support overlapping parks: it’s not easy to see but if you know where to find one it looks like this:

The same trick works for Alcatraz, if you click the yellow point marking US-7888 - Alcatraz Island National Historic Site. So you kind of have to suspect it’s there ahead of time, I guess…

I had to find an example of nested parks in the POTA documentation, because in my experience, every time I’ve expected to find overlapping POTA parks, on further research I’ve learned that the parks touch but do not actually overlap, despite many resources online reporting the opposite. (For example am Angel Island in San Francisco Bay is often reported to be part of the GGNRA, but as far as I can tell, actually is not.) In my experience it seems that tracking down accurate boundaries of these parks can be quite challenging, which is why I like this tool so much. I doubt it’s perfect, since clearly it’s difficult to nail down sufficiently high-quality data, but I haven’t found any errors yet.
