Post Blackpool Bagging

I’ll be making one of those quite rare pilgrimages down from Scotland to NW England for the Blackpool Rally in a few weeks.

My normal plan is to bag a G summits on the way down on Saturday afternoon, stay Saturday evening in/around Blackpool and attend the rally on Sunday. This is easy and assuming it’s not terrible WX, I have a suitable unique to activate on Saturday.

It seems silly to drive 550miles and not grab as many summits as possible. I haven’t booked anywhere for Sunday evening yet so the next challenge is what to do Sunday evening/Monday?

Any suggestions for a pair of summits accessed from probably the M6 going North?

I was thinking maybe The Calf / Yarlside. Or maybe Whernside / Great Coum? Suggestions for what may make a nice pair that are not too far from the M6 please?

The Calf/Yarlside are a good, natural pair (my outing tomorrow). This would be my recommendation.

As well as Whernside/Great Coum there’s Calf Top/Great Coum.

I did The Calf and Yarlside a few days ago. Really nice walk which I thoroughly enjoyed.

If the WX is not too good a quick pair is Great and Little Mell Fell G/LD-035 and G/LD-037.

But I’d go for Calf / Yarlside if the weather is condusive!

The Calf / Yarlside would be good, but for a slightly longer detour and a bit of a drive between Wildboar Fell / Nine Standards from Kirkby Stephen. The Black Bull in Nateby did good food on Tuesday….

You probably know all these Andy, but in LD land there are:

  • Great Mell Fell G/LD-035 & Little Mell Fell G/LD-037
  • Lambrigg Fell G/LD-036 & Grayrigg Forest G/LD-038
  • Hutton Roof Crags G/LD-052 & Arnside Knott G/LD-058

They would be my suggestion for a “grab n go” hutton roof is literally next to the M6, and arnside knott is about 2 miles off the M6… you can have them both boxed off and done in a couple of hours… i have them in my “plan” for the next time im up that way!

But you can’t park on the hard shoulder and nip up the side of the hill. And it isn’t that close.

Your definition of a mile is clearly different to mine.

Country mile?

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn’t want to complicate things by saying I was only interested in uniques. In fact I’d happily bag something again if it felt like a good walk etc.

The Calf/Yarlside get a few thumbs up so they will be my primary target. Of course it depends on the WX, I wont bother if it is persisting with rain. I’ll book Sunday night accommodation nearer the day.

Many thanks for all comments.

If there’s a northerly wind it’ll be cold like yesterday. Hopefully you won’t suffer a geomagnetic storm which made getting contacts a struggle yesterday.

The Calf/Yarlside is a proper combination as it’s a round walk rather than up/down, drive to another place and up/down again. Well worth doing many times.

Mrs JWA reckons that about my definition of an inch aswell…

Thing is, its not far, whatever way you look at it!

If the weather is poor then there are also several options which are not massive detours.

For mildly poor weather Longridge Fell (G/SP-014) or Easington fell (G/SP-012) are short easy walks.

For even worse weather a slight detour south (approx 30 mins from the M55/M6 junction - summit is about 10 mins from J26 of M6) would get you to the delights of Billinge Hill (G/SP-017) which I notice would be a unique for you. About 5 mins from car to summit (<1 min to inside activation zone if required - park in layby near the golf course).
