I have struggled to balance radio, paddle and phone when going portable. What seems to work best for me is putting down the radio somewhere, and holding the phone with paddle in one hand. I’ve built a little paddle and holder based on @VK3IL, the principle may be of interest to fellow screen loggers…
That’s really interesting. Does the bracket get hot at all?
Potential revision could be to make the bracket from 3D printed material and maybe have a section slightly sunk down a bit along the side so you could use some double sided tape and place a metal strip there to fit in place attach a paddle to?
In my case paddle stays at hand temperature, my phone doesn’t heat. Certainly a lot of improvements depending on personal preferences can be made. For me the choice was based on minimal weight (25g) as my portable activity is mostly an add on to hikes I make.
Recently I have used my Bamakey more while portable. Works very well by scotching (double-sided tape) a small thin metal piece on the phone case. Idea was so simple it took me some time to discover….
That’s very clever! I just did the same with my Palm Pico Paddle and shall try it later at DL/AL-150
It might well become my preferred setup for the future!!
Hi Peter,
I haven’t tried it myself, but I think I’ll need a reversed cable if my transmitter doesn’t allow it, due to the keyer being upside down. Brilliant solution, thanks!

Yes Eric, you need to be able to reverse the paddle, as you can do in the settings of the QMX. It’s very convenient. Now I am facing the issue of what to do for logging if I want to use the QMX fast-style as a hand-held with a 2.5m whip….
Ok Peter wasn’t for the QMX and to keep it simple your solution is very good !
Any trouble on the phone with metal foil and magnetic things ?
Here running an iPhone ?!?
