So my grandiose plans for today were scuppered by yesterday’s Panto Christmas Meal which turned into a bit of a session. Recent LD event attendees will recognise The Elleray. The new Greek Restaurant OPA did good food before-hand.
So today’s activation was hastily put together, and I decided for the easy Claife Heights G/LD-053. If you can stomach the £6.45 fair each way on the Windermere Ferry then it is quick to get to from Windermere (or drive via Ambleside) - parking is cheap with a £2 honesty box in the Village Hall opposite the Cookoo Brow Inn. The walk is around an hour up, 45 minutes back. The weather was better than expected, moist but not raining.
This was the first outing of my trapped end-fed 20/30/40m antenna, built during a FARS event hosted by Nick @G0HIK. I like my SOTABeams Band Hopper dipole because it is self supporting, but actually guying the tactical mast was fairly straightforward and the antenna performed well (even with the sub-optimal setup with the wire resting on the trig point!).
Good response on 2m FM today with the Spectrum Communications Slim-J working well from this sometimes difficult site for 2m activations. 20m and 40m also worked well with the new antenna and the FT-817ND @ 5w with an external 3S LifePo4.
During my HF activation the cloudbase lifted and presented me with nice views of a damp Windermere.
