Unless you modify the rules so that a record is derived from X number of back-to-back runs which are then averaged, like they do in aviation.
We had EV motorcycles in the Isle of Man TT a couple of years back. The biggest challenge was cooling the batteries sufficiently in order to make it around the 37¾ at anything approaching a moderately quick pace, and even then they could only manage one lap. The “TT Zero” as it was known soon became “TT Zero Interest” and hasn’t been repeated since.
Indeed, it’s obvious that EV is the way forward but there is no emotion to them. And in my case I like the fact I can drive to Lochnagar car park, climb the hill, and drive home without needing to refuel or recharge. If I’m gentle and keep to under 60mph and I can get approaching 575miles out of 1 tank of diesel and replenish that range including paying in under 5mins. Can’t do that yet in an EV.
But nothing exemplifies what petrol engines are all about more than this clip of some “proper”* hill climbing in a 250GTO with a Columbo 250 V12 single cam / bank and 6 dual Weber carbs. That noise is what it’s all about and is mainly induction roar not exhaust noise though there is some of that.
You’ve inadvertently reminded me of a Laserdisc in my library that covers the famous Targa Florio. Some amazing cars on this disc.
Also picked a couple of others off the shelf that folks here might enjoy. I have some nice WRC box sets from 1985 to 1993 including the brilliant Group B, also a stack of F1 Laserdiscs that have some fantastic on board.
But it was your post reminded me about Targa Florio. I’m not sure if it is still going these days. Anyone know?
I managed 710 miles and still had some fuel in hand when I refilled my 60 litre tank… courtesy of the trip up and down the M6 and A75 to Galloway when we activated Kirriereoch Hill GM/SS-287. Even with some local driving, I expect 630 miles from a tank…. all this with 400Nm of torque, just great for climbing hills, but there are only a couple of small drive on summits in Scotland. To get up a “big hill" maybe I need to take a ferry….
Ron, VK3AFW,
I suppose the car would huff and puff up there at 9000 feet. My present car hasn’t been up there. I used to have to go over a few of those passes when I was working as a tech.
Those 1970s and 1980s vehicles made it OK, I was in second gear part of the way on
some roads, trying to make all those curves, shifting gears, working CW on 20 meters
with a Vibroplex bug! What fun! If I wasn’t in too big of a hurry, I’d stop at the top of the pass and work a few QSOs whilst parked. This was with tube type mobile radios, so I had to leave the motor running to keep from killing the battery!

And I shall steal the moderator’s hat should that happen and close and delist the thread. Then ensure the poster is fully aware and committed to the AUP before their posting rights are returned.
Now, now, guys! You are being provocative, where’s my spiky hat?
For my part, I don’t give a tinker’s for motor sport or the advantages/disadvantages of EV, but…
rang a bell with me, having had to dodge silent EVs when walking the dog late at night and crossing a road with lots of parked cars. Some people say that EVs should have noise makers fitted by law and I concur!
The first time I flew to the states, the plane was an old 747 without individual in-seat entertainment. The only film that played was shown on a pull down projector screen was all about a guy who made sound makers for cars. To make any car sound like another one. Connected via the accelerator to produce faithful sounds. So if you had a mini metro , it could sound like a Lamborghini. It was a rubbish film, I cant remember the name and I wouldn’t recommend it, but the tech was interesting.
