Ofcom EMF risk assessment & UK SOTA

To continue G8CPZ Andy’s thread…

I’m not interested in the arguments for or against the requirement, it’s coming anytime soon (possibly late 2021) so I think that all licenced amateurs in the UK should face up to it and be pragmatic.

Now that the RSGB have published a draft of a downloadable EMF calculator on their website, specifically tailored for amateur radio stations, I wanted to bring this topic back to the top of the list and refer RSGB Members to the March 2021 Radcom pages 22-24 and anybody interested to the RSGB Website link:

https://rsgb.org/main/technical/emc/emf-exposure/

My main interest in reviewing the upcoming OFCOM EMF requirement is in calculating what are the safe separation levels from my home station antennae into my nearest neighbours gardens and on to the public road and path that runs across the front of my house. Calculating figures for my portable low power SOTA station, will come later in my case.

It is up to us to check out the emf calculator created by the RSGB and provide feedback to improve it, then we may get the best and easiest to use tool for the task of meeting the OFCOM requirement by knowing that our stations are safe enough to meet the worldwide ICNIRP guidelines which OFCOM rely on for their calculations.

Those interested could compare notes on the use of the EMF calculator to determine safe distances to our antennae on the SOTA reflector

I’m starting with calculations for my 2m yagi antenna and will report back when I have done my calculations to determine the safe distance at the maximum power level I use.
