North Scotland (Ullapool) - Impromtu Activation

Hello Reflector,

I will be activating for the first time In Northern Scotland this week because of a short notice rendezvous with a research vessel in Ullapool.

Sharing on here to signpost this activation to any of those 2 metre folk who operate in the area.
Does anyone have any advice for the area/season?

GM/NS-153 is a straightforward walk up the track to the phone masts, then a bit beyond.
Stac Pollaidh is a bit hard to find a place to put an antenna, I had two goes at this and needed HF to get enough QSO’s.
Best of luck with your activations.

I used an SPX100 base loaded whip on a mag mount base with counterpoise radials thrown over the rock. It worked surprisingly well on 20m for me.
I struggled a bit finding the return route down off the ridge both times, but it’s not really my area of expertise !

There’s a network of 2m ops. on Skye, the outer Hebrides and the west coast. I’d suggest contacting Gordon @GM4OAS for a kick off. He may have a few contacts.

You’ll have great 2m take off to Lewis and Harris on these summits and there is a great bunch of Hams on Lewis who I’ve worked on summits before.

I found calling late afternoon the day before gets the word out and you’ll have no trouble when on summit !

Thanks @G5OLD @MM0EFI, I’m looking forward to (hopefully) working the Hebrides and will be sure to put out a CQ call the day before to check in with the local stations before the activation.

Good luck and hope the weather is good. The view out to the North Atlantic and Lewis is phenomenal on a good day!
