Myarth Storm Damage GW/SW-035

Matt MW0KAX and I activated Myarth GW/SW-035 today. This is a summit that needs permission and it’s the first activation for a while - the last being August 2023.

This summit is forested but has been absolutely battered by Storm Darragh. The estate did warn us, but I don’t think we anticipated just how bad it was.

We had allot of difficulty with tracks completely blocked with huge areas of trees just flattened. It was absolute carnage….

We did manage to find a route to the AZ, with some difficulty requiring walking some distance around the summit. Most of it was beating through forest and undergrowth.

I anticipate it will be more difficult in summer when the undergrowth is up. It requires care and good route finding. I will post a GPX for future reference.

Storm Arwen of the South it seems. Darragh was bad enough up on the north-east coast at my Northumberland house. I remember laying in bed listening to our roof timbers creaking, but this destruction is something else. Well done on not bailing out.

Blimey, rather sad to see how different it looks compared to my visit in 2023. Well done for battling on and managing to activate the summit.

If the undergrowth is like that in the summer it will be quite difficult to reach the summit !

I saw your alerts/spots - didn’t realise you’d be in for a no-piste adventure.

I recall a fair few fallen conifers when the snow fell on the Quantocks a good few years ago… one tree barely missing me (they were still going down one by one, under the weight)… but this is something else.

That’s a shame to see.

Tracks were easy to follow when I was up there.

Reminds me of my “adventure” onto G/LD-053 Claife Heights, just a day or two after Storms Arwen Some serious hanging “widow makers”. It was Sunday 28 Nov 2021

This one sums up that storm… at the start of the route on Claife Heights.

Nature eh? Raw in tooth and claw.

Anyway… it was great to get you S2S today on two different hills.
