Myarth GW/SW-035

Following on from talks at the GW SOTA event yesterday, it seems like a handful of operators are keen to activate the Myarth, GW/SW-035.

I’d thought I’d start a thread and gauge interest on potentially doing a group activation, subject to permission. My initial thinking is a weekend in September, so that holidays etc are out of the way. It is also well clear of the Green Man festival.

If you are interested in potentially being involved in the activation, please reply to the post stating so and I will add you to the potential list. Dates available would be helpful too, but I may do a poll later on to get a specific date that suits all. It may be a forced hand depending what is happening at Glanusk Estate, I’ll keep this thread updated as the plan forms.

Cheers,

Hi Jared,

I would just like to advise in the past the Glenusk Estate didn’t really like big groups of people walking up Myarth GW/SW-035 and they preferred to have a maximum of 2 people walking up this hill at the same time. However, back in 2015, my dad Tom @M1EYP successfully arranged permission from the Glenusk Estate for 3 of us (me, my dad and my brother Liam) to walk up Myarth GW/SW-035.

Not sure if in recent years, the Glenusk Estate are now happy for big groups of people to walk up Myarth GW/SW-035, but I know that this never use to be the case as explained above. However, unlike Upper Park GW/MW-032, it is easy for SOTA activators to obtain permission from the Glenusk Estate to activate Myarth GW/SW-035 providing that that are either solo or company with ideally only one other person, but being in company with 2 other people can be possible on occasions also. I would suggest that for SOTA activators who wish to activate Myarth GW/SW-035 to sort out their own permission to activate this summit rather then trying to arrange a group SOTA activation which may well put future permission requests from the Glenusk Estate into jeopardy.

Thanks for volunteering Jared, but given Jimmy’s advice I’m more than happy to continue to arrange my own and Kevin’s visit separately if you want to do a joint with Mike.

Cheers and good to see you both yesterday!

Hi Jimmy,

The situation may have changed.. Looking at hillbagging there was a group trip on the 6th June with a group of 18. I’ll phone up and see what their preference is though, and see if it would be possible.

Cheers,

Jared

Good to see you both over the weekend. I’d be up for a collaborative visit so long as that doesn’t causes any issues as mentioned.

Some good news!

I’ve spoken to Glanusk estate and they are happy to have a group of up to 10, though it has to be before the 1st September.

With that in mind, I am proposing two dates:

Saturday 8th August OR

Saturday 29th August

If you are interested, please let me know which date you would prefer in the poll below, the one with the most will be the preferred date I will go back to them with.

Cheers,

Just remember it’s possibly the worst VHF summit in Engand and Wales …. and when I was there there wasn’t much space for HF antennas.

And how! I arranged to go up this one with 3 s2s in place - but to get the 4th…. I know the others came back every 15 mins or so to commiserate but it was about an hour I believe before I got the 4th. I’ve rarely packed up so quickly!! Good luck

I voted before I realised only one vote was allowed. I could do either, preferably the 29th. Thanks for sorting this out!
