Planning a backpacking trip that will put me on the summit in the fall and trying to decide if it’s worth packing a 2m HT to try to do anything. I do see 2m contacts logged so I figure they’re out there.
Has anyone been up enough to know if a HT will get the job done? Will a SignalStick or roll-up J-pole get the job done or should I plan on bringing a portable Yagi? (I may build the K6ARK arrow shaft one soon anyway).
Don’t really want to dedicate the weight for much bigger gear than that.
Anyone in W4V know where all the hunters live if I do run a Yagi?
I’ve been up there a few times and usually carry an HT, but I can’t remember if I spent much time trying 2m. Looking back through my logs, it doesn’t look like I’ve actually made any 2m contacts from up there.
I’d say it’s probably a little hit or miss, but definitely worth bringing the HT to try. I’d lean towards the roll-up J-pole over the Signal Stick.
Thanks, I appreciate it! I think ultimately I’ll be annoyed if I don’t at least try. Ultimately it’ll depend on the pack weight though. I’ve made some tweaks to gear since the last time I was out but according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy there have been some sketchy bears up in that area so probably gotta be prepared for that too.
