I met Juan EA1AAM several years ago in Ferrol and a good ham friendship has grown between us over the years.
En Ferrol conocí hace muchos años a Juan EA1AAM y una buena amistad de radioaficionado ha crecido entre nosotros.
Together we have activated lighthouses, built and tested magnetic loop antennas, performed several junky repairs at Juan’s inventing shack and the only remaining thing for us to do together was SOTA.
Juntos hemos activado faros, construido y probado antenas de aro magnéticas, realizado muchos cacharreos en el local de los inventos de Juan y la única cosa que nos faltaba por hacer juntos era SOTA.
Juan had been strugglying with a new magnetic loop antenna over the last few weeks and he told me yesterday that he had finally made it work, so I invited him to go up to Mt. A Lagoa EA1/CR-034 and activate the SOTA summit with the mag loop.
Juan había estado peleando con una nueva antena de aro magnética durante las últimas pocas semanas y me dijo ayer que finalmente había conseguido hacerla funcionar, así que le invité a subir al monte A Lagoa EA1/CR-034 y activar la cima SOTA con la antena de aro magnética.
Juan is 82 years old now and currently under medical treatment to combat a cancer, so we got to the summit by car.

There we set up with my usual SOTA kit, plus his magnetic loop.
First we tried it on 40m and it worked very well with not any noticeable difference between the mag. loop and my usual endfed sloper hanging from the top of my 7m telescopic fishing rod tied to the trig point cylinder.
Allí, montamos la estación con mi SOTA kit habitual más su antena de aro magnética.
Primero la probamos en 40m y funcionó muy bien sin apreciar ninguna diferencia entre la antena de aro magnética y mi habitual hilo alimentado en el extremo colgado en ángulo desde lo alto de mi caña de pescar telescópica de 7m amarrada al cilindro del vértice geodésico.
Then we QSYed to 20m and we found that the residual capacity of the used variable capacitor seemed to be too high because we couldn’t tune the mag loop even with the varable capacitor fully open.
Estonces hicimos QSY a 20m y encontramos que la capacidad residual del condensador variable utilizado debía de ser demasiado alta porque no pudimos sintonizar la antena con el condensador variable completamente abierto.
So we finally proceeded with my enfed sloper for a quick SOTA activation on 20m SSB.
Conditions were great for inter-EA and after a selfspot on SOTAwatch, we got chased by Manuel EA2DT, who spotted us on some other cluster (DX-fun?) which brought a great pile up of booming EA stations. Two Italian stations also made it to the log.
Así que finalmente procedimos con mi antena de hilo alimentada en el extremo para una rápida activación en 20m SSB.
Las condiciones estaban geniales para contactos dentro de EA y tras un auto-spot en SOTAwatch, fuimos cazados por Manuel EA2DT, wuien nos spoteó en algún otro cluster (DX-fun?) lo que trajo un gran pile-up de fortísimas estaciones EA. Dos estaciones italianas también entraron en el log.
Juan EA1AAM only made a couple of QSOs with Manuel EA2DT and Miguel EA1DMP in the begining of the activation and then he asked me to keep going on my own for the rest of the contacts.
Juan EA1AAM solo hizo un par de QSOs con Manuel EA2DT y Miguel EA1DMP al principio de la activación y entonces me pidió que siguiera yo solo para el resto de los contactos.
With only 2 QSOs in the log, Juan will not be able to claim the single activator point of this summit, but this was the very first valid SOTA activation by Juan EA1AAM and I have registered him in the SOTA database and introduced his 2 activator QSOs.
Con solo 2 QSOs en el log, Juan no podrá reclamar el punto de activador de esta cima, pero esta fue la primera activación SOTA de Juan EA1AAM y le he registrado en la base de datos e introducido sus 2 QSOs de activador.

My SOTA kit includes a second set of earplugs for visitors or other hams joining me, so they were used by Juan today. He enjoyed very much the activation and listening to so many EA stations arriving in such very good conditions on 20m.
Mi kit SOTA incluye un segundo juego de auriculares para visitantes u otros colegas que me acompañen, así que hoy fueron usados por Juan. Él disfrutó mucho la activación y escuchar tantas estaciones EA en 20m en tan buenas condiciones.
I’m not sure whether Juan will carry out other activations himself but this one was a first and once started, anything can follow.
No estoy seguro de si Juan realizará otras activaciones por su cuenta pero esta fue un comienzo y una vez empezado cualquier cosa puede pasar.
