Mountain

Double for Jimmy and I today. We missed last week’s through being away in Essex, so collected the video from my mum’s and watched it before tonight’s. Last week’s was Ben Nevis & Cairngorms, this week the Pennines. All good stuff, although I would have liked the Pennine Way to have had a feature on this week’s offering. Next week is Snowdonia which looks good, and I hope that Griff is already out and about making us another series.

As usual, we also watched Julia Bradbury’s programme on BBC4 straight after. Also enjoyable, but not as entertaining as Mountain. And then it’s straight into Match of the Day 2. You can’t go out on Sundays anymore!

In reply to M1EYP:
Did any one see Sally Webster on channel 3 (itv), before Mountain started, up in the lakes great stuff this TV,

Did anybody watch her climbing during the week - that lady has some courage! Shame the Cairngorm climb had to be cancelled, the 1/2 hour pre-amble on Saturday was much better than Griff’s efforts on the Cairngorms - but then I’m biased!

Did any recognize the walker going up Kinder Scout with the antenna sticking out of the side of the red and black rucksack on last nights program of mountain.
Any know who he was. Could it be M0BLF/P

In reply to GM4TOE:

that lady has some courage!

No kidding… after watching her at Bosi and then doing one of my favourites, Crackstone Rib in N. Wales… I was blown away by her effort on the Old Man of Stoer… I think the they took the VS route.

I even had sweaty palms just watching it… and I didnt think it would go down well with the XYL if I sat using my chalk bag in the living room just watching telly!

Here’s an idea though… SSOTA - Sea Stacks on the Air… Anyone?

73 Marc GØAZS

We already have two in the SOTA programme Marc - GM/SI-204 Stac an Armin & GM/SI-214 Stac Lee. They still await their first activations!

In reply to M1EYP:
I was wondering how a stack could get Marilyn status… of course it could only be St Kilda!

Well that’s another reason to go there… Diving, climbing and now SOTA. So much to do and yet so far away :frowning:

Having watched Julia I thought she did pretty well. I thought the programme was a bit misnamed though. Apart from the stack, they werent the toughest rock climbs in britain. Commando Ridge (now bosigran ridge) is easy after pitch 1, and even that isnt hard. Crackstone rib, I agree, is a fabulous route but hardly high in the grading list. The sea stack was impressive however. Yes the route was only VS, but it requires a different state of mind to the others.

Good to see so many outdoor programmes featuring recently, and all showing Britain. Of course with prime time, they cant feature specialist hobbies too estensively, but I think they’ve done pretty well.

Perhaps an edited repeat of the Bonnington epic on the Old Man of Hoy would have been a more suitable replacement for the “Big Climb” programme than the one on red squirrels that we actually got. Shame the BBC didnt think that the weather in Britain might be bad(!) and plan a suitable replacement.

All the recent programmes are available on BBC iplayer too, which I’ve found is a good way to catch up. I’ll probably watch the Wainwright tonight.

I also noticed that antenna sticking out of the rucksack - thoroughly enjoyed last nite’s Mountain - good to see Kinder Scout and learn about its history.
As for Julia Bradbury, I could watch her scale a molehill (!)

For some reason last nights ‘Mountain’ has not appeared on BBC iPlayer so i’ve missed it :frowning:
To compensate i’ll watch Julia twice

In reply to G7ADF:
I believe Commando Ridge (also originally Bosigran Ridge!) has gone up a grade due to the loss of a hold in the corner near the start, that would still leave it as just a severe although it seems pretty impressive when a high sea is running! I think they chose it because of the good camera positions. The Doorway climb would have been more fun and look equally good but used to freak some people out!

The guy with the antenna might have been Mountain Rescue, I believe the Beeb normally ask a few of them to be handy to protect their precious crews and presenters! The platforms they constructed for the Glencoe epic yonks ago are still visible!

It may still appear yet, Roger, so check back. The first one didn’t appear till later on the Monday evening.

Marianne and myself have just had a couple of nights in the Lakes. Yesterday we did the Wainwright favourite ‘Catbells’ which was featured on Mountain and immediately after on Wainwright Walks on the same night a couple of weeks ago. It was a nice walk with great views all around, but not enough to fill a day - after getting off the boat launch at Hawse End, it was only two hours to climb to the summit, descend the other end of the ridge and follow the bridleway back to the pier on Derwent Water. We needed to kill some time drinking Jennings ales in Keswick before returning to the hotel!

Jimmy (and Liam) were staying at my mum’s place - hence why Marilyns weren’t permitted for Marianne and I!

Hi everyone,

Don’t forget this evening’s last episode of this programme !!

Peter

Thanks for your reminder Peter, I had forgotten.
