I think I prefer paying a fiver rather than finding that the local landowner has conveniently blocked any parking spots with large boulders…

I think you are missing the point Paul. ISTR it should take an averagely fit person about 1h30 to climb and descend Moel Fammau from the car park. £2 for 4h, minus 1h30 walking leaves 2h30 to setup and activate. For Foel Fenli, 1h up and down is about right for an averagely ft person leaving 3h for radio tomfoolery.
So by doing it in stages means you spend £2 twice rather than £5 once leaving a pound saved to spend on KitKats (or Toffee Crisps or Double Deckers). It’s winner in my book!

Thanks Andy - I got that point. I suppose what I was trying to say that paying a fiver for parking or four quid is for me much better than discovering my planned parking spot - carefully checked on Google Street view is now blocked by several large boulders and I have now got an extra 4km along a road to walk…I suppose I would be happier if it was free but I would prefer a landowner to charge rather than ban… (and the car park is brilliantly sited for both summits…)

Ah! Yes, this is known as a Perthshire Welcome. Quite a few suitable parking areas have been blockaded with boulders and a “new convenient parking area” constructed a km or two away from the paths people want to use. Can’t have towny scum parking where it’s convenient for them can we

They (the AONB people) had a cabin up there in the car park selling drinks and snacks but the £1 you save won’t even get you a KitKat.
However you can park for free for 2 hours in the new grasscrete layby just before the cattlegrid. That’s enough time to activate one of the summits and means the money saved could just about get you a cuppa and a flapjack.
