Mid Wales One Mid Week

The forecast in GW/MW had been good for the last few days, despite all the rain we had for the GW SOTA event last Saturday :see_no_evil: Early this week, I was sat in work, looking out of the window at all the local summits, with the sun shining down on them - I was itching to get out and climb a mountain!

Thursday evening looked to be the best evening of the week, so I said to the family, make sure your all ready and meet me at work when I finish at 5pm - we are going on a mini adventure to bike and hike Mid-Wales number one, Plynlimon GW/MW-001.

Plynlimon is a lovely 6 point summit, our local highest, and sits above the Nant y Moch damn with fantastic views on a good day. This evening, it didn’t disappoint:

We parked up in the small car park (£5 per car) just south of the summit, and gathered our stuff together, making sure we had plenty of water to take, and our sun shades to shelter us from the sun when on top. We also took some snacks to have as a small picnic, when watching the sun set later on. The route we took is below:

The first part of the route we did by bike, it’s a stoned track that leads to the comms towers, which were standing very high pointing at the sun:

The last part of the route is by foot, where you walk the ridge, taking all the views in. On this occasion, they were pretty damn amazing:

We saw a gentleman pitch his tent, to the north side of the trig, he was in for a treat watching the sun set, and watching it rise early in the morning. We said hello, touched the trig, and made our way to the large cairn, where I set up for 145-FM and 433-FM, and the girls opened all the snacks, and had a feast:

After putting a call out on 145-FM first, I managed to work 11 stations pretty rip-rap. I moved over to 433-FM and added a further 5 contacts to my log - a successful activation

Unfortunately, after the GW SOTA fun at the weekend, I had left my patch lead in the landy, so that meant no HF - sorry folks, I will make sure to remember it next time! Nevertheless, we all had a great evening, with many fantastic views. I think that’s a first for me on MW-001, it’s usually awful weather when I’ve activated that summit multiple times in the past.

I’d like to say a big thank you to those who worked me - looking forward to another miniature adventure this coming weekend!

Nice one Ben, and good to get you from a summit after so long! Looked a really nice evening to be out and about. I switched to 70cm but couldn’t hear you unfortunately, Stiperstones right in the path I think.
