Not all of them are semaphores, but they all have their own history.
No summits along the “craggy” coastline. In the neighbourhood of Saint Nic, there is one. Not so far from this statue and the old chapel of Sainte Marie du Ménez-Hom.
Ménez-Hom, only 330m. and the highest hill in Bretagne. A “highway” (D83…) to a nice parking plot near the top. It’s an Celtic hill, very popular for paragliders and remote controlled gliders. It’s also a geodesic point.
I’ve used my not resonant DIY End-Fed (11m.long) Inverted V antenna (balun 9:1) with tuner. It was difficult to make my QSO’s on 40m. I’ve changed the balun with the balun of my DIY resonant 20m. End-Fed. Then: 9 QSO’s on 20m., with 1 S2S contact @2M0TFF (GM/WS-015)
Ones again, I’m thankfull to all HAM’s who have tried to make a QSO with me.
Hi Rob,
Congrats on your Brittany “Breiz” Activation
Two things from a radio amateur who lived 30 years in Brittany and 10 years in Provence
It all depends on what you want to enjoy locally…
If it’s Gigondas, you’ll have to go south where it’s very hot right now. The land of F/CR … (see photos)
In Breizh you have probably tasted Breton mead ?
Yes it’s a Breton beverage his name is Chouchenn
Definitely for the Gigondas it is better if you can taste it there, where it is not the only wine worth the trip… there are at least 4 peaks that are not very active and I am not talking about Ventoux which at 1912m only gives 6 small points It makes you dream of FL/VO
I always enjoyed holidays in Brittany, the Vendee and Charante Maritime… unfortunately before SOTA came into existence. I operated from the campsites, usually on 2m SSB, sometimes FM… a chance to use my schoolboy French. Replies often came back in English. Indeed when mixing with the locals on a daily basis, conversations usually started in French and quickly moved to English… their preference. One guy I met in Brittany said he was more closely related to the Cornish than the Parisian French.
I miss those times and often wonder what it would have been like escaping to do a few summits while the wife and kids went down the beach. Maybe something to consider… but no kids as they are now 42 and 45 and have families of their own.
I’m definitely not a wine expert. I just go to the supermarket and buy me good bottle of wine. That’s it. Embarrassing for myself, I know… Thanks for all good advice. Still so many summits and “good tastes” to explore in France!
When I was in Brittany, my thoughts were also in Cornwall (visited the “Marconi - ground” in Poldhu) and in Wales (scrambled in Snowdonia). That was before my SOTA addiction. We have walked a lot on the Costal Path. I certainly come back, … this time fully SOTA packed!
Yes, Rick, you don’t have to look far; cider is also very popular in Normandy.
I wasn’t far from Paimpol, just closer to the English Channel… Pleubian, a place you must have visited.
