Thanks for the report. I have always done it with Great Mell Fell. Parking for that one is a bit more limited at 407247. The first time I did the hill in summer I tried the direct approach, which was sub optimal. (To be more precise about 500m of fighting through chest high bracken uphill) only to discover a perfectly usable footpath once I reached the top. It is probably obvious but for the easy way head SW along the track from the road (NOT North) and then follow the (now) obvious footpath (which isn’t on a 1:25000 OS map) which roughly follows the ridge up to the summit…. There isn’t a lot of shelter on the top…..
We were initially planning to do both Mell’s. But we have to leave our 15 year old choc lab in a cottage these days, and don’t like leaving him too long. Even though all he is does is sleep. ![]()
Great Mell has teased me several times when staying in our motorhome at the Troutbeck CAMC campsite ( next to the outdoor centre). It would be ideal from the campsite if there was a path to approach Great Mell Fell from the west.
I found it surprising that such a nice little summit with its fine views should have such a paltry little cairn to mark the top!
I enjoyed activating Little Mell Fell last year even though I slipped over on the way down! Definitely worth a second visit. Im.up that way at the end of May so I’ll probably combine it with Great Mell Fell.
