Cracking day in Eryri on Friday. I delayed my start by an hour to miss the heavy rain band first thing in the morning.
Bus pass ride up from Llanberis to Pen y Pass on the S1 Yr Wyddfa Sherpa. Then a linear walk over Lliwedd GW/NW-008, Yr Wyddfa GW/NW-001 and Moel Cynghorion GW/NW-030, before walking back to the car in Llanberis. 18km and a little over 1000m of ascent. Not bad for an old(ish) fella.
Using the bus is a great way to have a linear walk and it avoids the crazy parking charges at Pen y Pass.
All contacts on 2m FM, FT-65 with a Slim-G on a 6m pole.
Lliwedd 9 contacts
Yr Wyddfa 17 contacts, including 1 S2S with G4KWG on St Sunday Crag G/LD-010.
Moel Cynghorion 5 contacts, including 2 S2S with MW0RWX on Glasgwm GW/NW-015 (who waited especially for me - thanks) and G4KWG on Fairfield G/LD-007 (weād both moved summits from earlier)
I was spotted by Dom M0BLF as he arrived for his SOTA activation. But he didnāt want to disturb me! Somehow I packed up and left and we didnāt meet, I had no idea he was there until Simon GW4TJC asked me if weād spoken. Dom got in touch via email later! Thanks for the photo.
Well done Gerald⦠especially using your bus pass! The outing reminded me of when Paul G4MD and myself activated Grisedale Pike G/LD-015 followed by Grasmoor G/LD-009 then the bus back to the start at Whinlatter Pass⦠way back in July 2011 when we were lads.
Thereās something rather satisfying about getting that bit for free. Iāve used mine a few times in Eryri on various Yr Wyddfa Sherpa bus services.
Iāve got a plan for doing the full Nantlle Ridge that way too. Only two of the tops are SOTA Summits, but the whole ridge is a great day out.
PS Since you looked at the topic as soon as I posted it, you might have missed the photos I added afterwards. After having āfun and gamesā uploading everything in one go, Iāve started doing the main post then adding the photos in an edit.
The Reflector doesnāt support video⦠but if you are interested in trains hereās one of the original steam locomotives on the Snowdon Mountain Railway.
Note the inclined boiler as itās almost always going uphill on this route.
What a brilliant idea Gerald and some lovely pictures -especially of you and the summit queue. Just found the video - super and lovely sound effects!
I recognise that style on Cynghorion as Iām usually cowering beside it but weāve got there by going over Moel Elio and then popping (staggeringā¦) up Cynghorion if we can be bothered and (capable). Once M0JLA walked on, gave me a vital contact so I qualified and then I tried to catch him up. Without success, of course, until we reached Peteās Eats I believe! those were the days. Keep up the good work.
