Hi Ed,
if your marking has faded, the small metal tab indicates the ground connection and the bottom.

I see you also replaced the connector with BNC. Good mod. I need to do that - I’ve been using an adapter (another thing that could be forgotten…).

Took it out again today and it just absolutely HOOVERED every single drop of radio in the ionosphere.
Same setup, went straight to 20m. 51 QSO’s (50 on 20m CW, 1 on 2m FM) in 1h 43 mins (technically it was 1h 33m). My very first QSO after going QRV was 5548km away in Williamsburg, VA, USA with K8LF (KLF is gonna rock ya).
I’m amazed I even made the QSO at all as I hadn’t connected my choke to the slug properly.
10 mins of wondering why RBN wasn’t picking me up followed. Then I went to see if there was a setup issue. Yep. Loose cable.
After that? 10 QSO’s in 8 minutes including USA, Latvia and anywhere else that would have me! Even had a pileup or two to navigate. Le Slug Rouge was an absolute beast today.
Went QRT happy as a happy thing could be, then did the mandatory check on 270 FM.
Bagged my first ever /MM contact on any band or mode. Turns out it was with a member of SOTA MT! @G4TJC operating as EI/G4TJC/MM in Dublin Port.
Epic!
It always pays to call out on 270, you never know what surprises await.
Went home a happy pup! ![]()
QSO Map:
Unfortunately, there’s no tab on my connection point, but now it is well marked what is up and down.
I find the spike screws in completely but the whip does not - do I need to re-tap the upper nut?
73 Ed.
Is there some dirt or a stone in the bottom of the nut? A blast with WD40 or contact cleaner might dislodge it.
No, it’s perfectly clean. I’ll take a closer look with a magnifying glass and see if I can see the “stop” in either the nut or on the bolt end of the whip. Actually, I have a second one of these whips. First thing will be to try to see if that has the same issue with the slug.
