Yes, no problem. No need to use the USB-C port at all if you just want fast charging via the KX2’s external DC jack. You’ll still need a hole in the side panel though, unless you are prepared to desolder the USB-C jack
In short, to put it another way, to have an easy-to-use, universal and state-of-the-art charging option for the KX2’s internal battery, without needing any further bells and whistles
While I wait for the panels to arrive (UPS now say “Due to operating conditions, your package may be delayed.”), I took the chance to solder the remaining components on the board and flash it (this will be performed on each prior to dispatch). Thanks to @HB9DQM’s excellent documentation that took next to no time.
Of course I added it to my KX2 although it probably won’t be going far from my desk for a while!
This is just to add how the KXUSBC2 charging function I asked about above, via the KX2 DC socket (without USB-C jack), was installed in my KX2#22xxjust 1 day later and worked perfectly.
For us insiders, it may not be entirely surprising that this was only possible thanks to the almost unsurpassed helpfulness of Manuel @HB9DQM, because after answering my question above, he remembered that he still had a KXUSBC2 rev1-board somewhere with a slightly damaged USB-C port … which he then desoldered and packaged the ready-to-connect circuit-board, along with 2 female pins and a short piece of heat shrink tubing for the connection to the B-pad and sent these parts to me via Swiss Post priority.
So all that remains for me is to express my sincere thanks to Manuel for this great effort, which was completely unexpected for me and I gladly consider this a slightly early gift for my upcoming 80th birthday
I’m about to order a KXUSBC2 from G7UFO and would like to take the opportunity to add side rails to my KX2. Specifically, I want to add the version from ProAudio Engineering with the integrated heatsink (this one).
Before ordering, I have a quick question: Are the dimensions of the rounded rectangular cutout in the KXUSBC2’s handle-style panel the same as those in the ProAudio Engineering side rail? I’d prefer both sides to match aesthetically.
I have the (non heatsink) SideKX rails here and UPS are suggesting I’ll receive the handles today. I’ll take a picture side-to-side as soon as they arrive but I believe they’ll be compatible.
Thanks @MM0EFI for showing the soldering part of the install in your video. It was the part that put me off ordering until now.
Placed an order there tonight via an NI forwarder (far cheaper even with forwarder fee) as shipping direct to EI makes it about €125 after taxes, duty and ‘admin fee’ An Post slap on top.
Thanks Fraser for your video which was very reassuring, and @G7UFO for offering these up. I look forward to hopefully not destroying my KX2 with a bungled install soon!

Side note: Will orders be shipped similar to how Fraser received his? E.g. Metal exposed on the side panel, wires done etc already? That would help massively if so!
No worries. It’s the part that everyone will nervous about.
Yes! Neil @G7UFO laser etches the paint away and does the wires, standoffs and flashes the firmware.
I hope my video does it justice. I believe everyone will want this for their KX-2. It is superb! Well done Manuel @HB9DQM and to Neil also, for getting these out!
Brilliant! Cannot wait to receive mine and install. My KX2 is a low serial number so hasn’t got the pins. You made the install process very reassuring for folks like myself who were a bit nervous and on the fence about getting this great board. If the radio didn’t cost so much and be so small and fiddly I wouldn’t be so worried about it.
I have those headset glasses you have too so will don those and a wrist strap and get it done asap whenever it arrives.
I forgot to check, is the board charging only or does it also have the clock on it too, or is that a whole different board? Don’t think my KX2 has it.
