Kirkstone Pass closed between Troutbeck and the Kirkstone Inn

Please note that the Kirkstone Pass is closed for the foreseeable future between Troutbeck and Kirkstone Inn (Windermere side) due to a landslide. Alternative access is from Ambleside via the Struggle.

Given the nature of the landslide and the difficulty of access I suspect it will be a long time before the road is open again.

No Kirkstone bus! I always think that the bus driver should play the closing soundtrack from The Italian Job, as he drives down from the top towards Windermere with only one hand on the steering wheel.

There goes my plan on going up Red Screes next month.

Mark’s post suggests that access to the Kirkstone Pass Inn car park may be possible from Ambleside.

Yes, you can still access the Kirkstone Inn car park for access to Red Screes or Stony Cove Pike but you’ll need to take the road from Ambleside (‘the Struggle’) or approach from the North via Glenridding.

You can then carry on down the other side for access to Glenridding and associated summits such as High Street, Place Fell, St Sunday Crag etc.

I haven’t heard anything about the 508 bus route but I think it highly unlikely they’d be able to re-route that up the Struggle given the gradients involved.
