Jyranvuori OH/JS-066

Finland is very flat country. It is full of one point summits. The closest two point summits are located about 800 km north from Helsinki area where I am living. The closest summit from Helsinki area is Tiirismaa OH/JS-037 where the distance is 120 km. From my point of view I am very lucky because my free time home is only 20 km from Jyränvuori, but before reaching Jyranvuori I need to drive 220 km first.

The number of SOTA activators and chasers is limited in Finland, less than ten hams per year. The father of SOTA Finland can be nominate Jaakko OH7BF/F5VGL who has been the most important messenger within ham community. Last year the most active activators where Marko OH9XX and Jari OH3KRH.

Jyranvuori OH/JS-066 activated first time 1.5.2013 by Toni OH3T. Today when we can celebrate its first year birthday it is the most activated summit in Finland, 28 summits and 1070 qsos (http://sotawatch.org/summits.php?summit=OH/JS-066). Difference to second position is 20 summits. Jyranvuori is very well reachable and many activators are living close of it.

Personally I have positive experiences only sitting in the hill and keeping qsos everywhere. Really everywhere because almost every time has been kept dx qsos also with EU qsos - nice and addictive summit!

Life goes on and Jyranvuori will be activate time to time during this year. Week 28 I will participate in FIN5 Orienteering event in Ruka area where aiming is also activate three two point summits. Distance from Helsinki area to Ruka is more than 800 km. During week 29 will be held YOTA Camp in Finland and if things goes correct manner participants get possibility to join in one SOTA summit – let see and you SOTA chasers will be informed!

The only Finnish ten point summits are located in Kilpisjarvi area in Lapland. Distance from Helsinki area is more than 1200 km. One day I will visit there again as activator because of personal reasons. One of my uncles, who was serving as remote patrol soldier during Second World War, was living in Kilpisjarvi since 1945. There he was livings as wilderness guide, photographer and sports man. In 1972 he was the first person who had guided tourists 100 times to Halti Mountain (10 points), distance from Kilpisjarvi is about 40 km. When he died in year 2000 we spread his ashes over the Saana Mountain (10 points) because he liked to live there.

Hi Saku,

Jyranvuori is one of the SOTA summits thanks to the work done by Jaakko OH6FQI.

I was busy with ski (and did not have car) during the winter months and now it seems that my weekends go to orienteering until June. By the way Kuopio would be good for both SOTA and orienteering. And the Jukola orienteering relay race 2014 is organized there this year.

The Finnish radioamateur summer camp organized by OH6AD is going to be at Hankasalmi, but the other Jaakko can tell more about it.

Hello Saku -

You have reminded me of the nice time I had in OH last summer, activating ten Finland summits including Tiirismaa-OH/JS-037. I enjoyed the company of Jaakko-OH7BF/F5VGL on Ukko-Koli-OH/JS-004 and Räsävaara-OH/JS-011 and also Jaakko-OH6FQI for my last OH summit on Kanavuori-OH/JS-057.

It was wonderful to explore the woods and mountains of my ancestors’ home and to have a chance to meet other folks that enjoy this great SOTA radiosport!
