Italian SOTA Help

In reply to MM0FMF:

Andy,

Two questions…

To be honest I’m not too concerned about claiming points for the activation. However, I would like to be able to claim an activation in the association for Mountain Explorer purposes. Am I correct that I would not be able to do that either?

Is there an issue with multiple activators operating during the same overall activation under the same club call and claiming individual credit assuming they are all properly licensed?

Thanks and 73,

Re “fuller license”: The Amateur Extra “Q&A” study manual has been sitting by my bedside on and off for years. I often look at it. The problem is, I never open it.

CEPT

it seems that since I have a General (not an Extra) license and since
Italy does not participate in ECC Recommendation (05)06 apparently I
can’t operate in Italy.

It seems, also, that you can’t operate under your own callsign in the United Kingdom either. I had not been aware of Recommendation (05)06 before and I note that the UK is not a signatory to it. Oh dear …

It would appear that Andy’s solution (i.e. upgrade your license) is the best one … certainly in the longer term!

Good luck.

According to the ARRL website there is a bilateral reciprocal agreement between the UK and the USA, and also Italy and the USA, so it would be useful to check the terms of those agreements.

You’re right, you couldn’t do that either.

Depends!

What we are trying to achieve is to make sure people can’t borrow a licence and boost their privileges. If you don’t have HF permission, you can’t use a club call which does have HF permissions to access HF. No problem using that club call on VHF. These conditions are typical for other award schemes, not just SOTA. It’s difficult to express simply and such that the words translate to other languages.

If you get the chance to activate a summit in Italy with the supervision of a local station, you can’t claim anything. You do get to experience European activity compared with US activity and that may be worth your time alone. Well Italy is a beautiful country so being in the hills there is worthwhile anyway. The chasers can claim the points etc.

Trying to get the rules right is exceptionally difficult. MT member Brian G8ADD has been working away in the background for some time trying to improve the words and the rest of the MT are reviewing them. It’s not easy.

As I understand it I probably can get a reciprocal Italian license but it looks like it would take at least 30 days to process the request. Unfortunately, when I found out about the Amateur Extra requirement for CEPT I was well within that time frame and could expect to receive the reciprocal license after my return to the US.
