Starting this Thursday 9/4/2025, I will embark on a 50 mile/7 day backpacking trip with the goal of activating all 4 summits on Isle Royale, a large island in Lake Superior. I will post alerts a little later this week. Please note that due to trail conditions, wx, possible wildlife encounters, and other “issues” that may arise, my QRV times may end up being a bit off ;-). Your patience, and spotting me when needed, are greatly appreciated!
Activations of these summits are rather rare – 2 have been activated only once, another twice, and the fourth 4 times. As an additional incentive to chase me, I will issue a certificate to anyone contacting me on at least 3 of the 4 summits.
My station will be a KH1, a Tufteln 41’ EFRW and a telescoping fishing rod for a mast. I also will bring the KH1 whip covering 20-17-15M as backup.
Mark NK8Q attempted to activate all 4 summits in 2016, and it was only a knee injury that stopped him at 3 activations. Many tnx to him for documenting his effort in a cover article in the June 2019 issue of CQ Magazine. I am following his route except I will stay on the Greenstone Trail and save the other worthy sites on the island for another trip. I hope to benefit from some of the same good fortune Mark had to go along with the extensive planning for this adventure.
