Isle of Skye activations

We will be in / on Isle of Skye in July for a few days
Actual plan is
QTH > Loch Lomand (Monday overnight) > Isle of Skye > Glasgow (Friday overnight) > QTH

Looking at options for SOTA activatons

Are there any easy / short walk SOTA summits on skye? that maybe don’t require navigating wait high heather/boggy areas ?
I did look for routes but there are not a lot of them.

Failing that, there are few un-activated POTAs

Ben Aslak GM/SI-041 took me about 1 hr 20 mins from the road over to the Glenelg ferry. It wasn’t too boggy and had spectacular views, not sure if that’s too long though.

The easiest two are to take the 15minute electric Ferry to Isle of Raasay and do Dun Caan GM/SI-092 and Beinn na h-Iolaire GM/SI-176. I’ve done both and they are simple. And you get to activate a less well known island.

On Skye, Ben Tianavaig GM/SI-105 looks straightforward with paths and parking. Sithean Bhealaich Chumhaing GM/SI-115 looks easy enough too. There is also The Storr GM/SI-028 which is a bit more effort but there are a zillion paths to the top.

If you look at Sotl.as you’ll find some summits which haven’t been on the air for 19 years. It’s not they’re super tricky just there are more famous summits with higher scores that tend to tempt people. Me, I’d like to think putting something on the air which hasn’t been activated for 19 years could generate a better pileup than something that’s on the air once a week. YMMV

Is this next week John? Just wondering as I will be on the island and will hopefully manage a couple of summits, though it is very much a holiday rather than a serious SOTA outing. I need to obtain the appropriate pass-outs.

Easier low hanging fruit are GM/SI-151, GM/SS-155 and GM/SI-161 in the south, GM/SI-104 and GM/SI-158 in the east central area and GM/SI-096, GM/SI-128 and GM/SI-152 in the west central area. However, I suspect you’ll be heading further north to see the falls and rock formations, so you might consider GM/SI-058 if you are walking the Quiraing. Other summits are available of course… Cuillins anyone?

Cheers for this list of hills. I will have a look.
We are travelling up 14th July.

I can get away with hills that are a short walk but I don’t really want to leave Mrs Vaz sitting in the car for a couple of hours as she isn’t a great fan of hill walking.

So far the only thing we have arranged is a meal at Loch Bay and a visit to Talisker

Plenty of looking at hills for me to do

cheers
John
