I was activating The Buck GM/ES-039 this morning. I was there for the RSGB High Altitude Balloon event. I didn’t have great success, however I did have great fun on 2m, with a brace of contacts from the top of Scotland down to Edinburgh, oh and Tim @G5OLD from his home near Bristol!
Tim was having a video call with Alex @GM5ALX, who was trying to talk him through fixing his LoRa tracker. Alex contacted me on 2m and then I worked Tim via Whatsapp and Alex’ radio.
There was a long discussion of this topic in 2015. I believe that there was general agreement that remote station operation was valid for SOTA if the RF was being transmitted legally under the terms of the operator’s own licence. Other cases were left undecided, as I recall.
Using the internet to Spot from a summit and letting folks know you are on air or txt to friends group to let them know you are ready to send from a summit. Using the internet to a remote stations is also done and some chasers actually listening for an activator via a remote SDR and give a score back over the air. I think Fraser’s post was a bit tongue in cheek don’t think he is that desperate for SOTA scores. .
I had HT in left hand and phone in right, so unfortunately no hand or device to record it. I was standing in the garden waiting for a break in the yakking when Tim called me. It seemed too good an opportunity to pass up!
