Icom IC 705 practical use

yes, that’s the one:

6-8 hours battery is enough for an activation
… and it has a real RS232 port.

Thanks for the info. Looks nice. Once or twice I lugged a small netbook along, but (a) it’s impractical with all the additional cables, (b) while FT8 carries you farther, it’s not as much fun as SSB (or CW, if you can do it).

Hi George,
Good points. Many posters are looking for reasons to not own a 705. Fine. I particularly like the bright if screen and the waterfall. It was a pleasure to use yesterday on two activations.

Many on this site have not learned to use a waterfall and don’t want to. Fine. For me it’s an extra tool in identifying band occupancy and modes in use.

The clip- on battery will do two activations for me but it would be at 5 W. I carry an external battery so I can run 10 W.

Most inbuilt ATUs max out on a 3:1 SWR. The KX series are better.

I can either use a resonant antenna or take an LDG tuner.

If I didn’t have a 705 then a KX2 would be my second choice.

For a long time I thought that the waterfall display is an useless gimmik. Now I have a TS-890 at home and I am happy with it.
But I don’t think it would be of much use to me as an activator. But when camping it would be nice.
I am a fan of 2m Band. It would be great if this was included in my KX2… now I just take the transverter with me.
But… If the performance of the 705 was the same as the KX2 with transverter …and if it had an equally good antenna tuner and if the display didn’t reflect… mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmhh I might get weak.

Been recovering from a knee OP past week so I have been using the ICOM 705 with the standard battery fitted for chasing and been rather impressed with the receiver, most stations I have heard I have been able to work and without the need to charge the battery a BP-307.
I originally started using the SDR-mobile app on the iPhone but struggled with the delay when using it remotely with the SSB TX and CW macros think I may have to play about with the settings a bit more. Past two days I have been using my Apple AirPods Pro connected to the IC-705, seems to work well just a bit of delay on SSB with the VOX but manageable, the noise cancelling works well for outside noise.

Only thing I needed to do was set the AirPods to pairing mode and on the ic705 pair a new device then set the headset function to normal and AF output to headset only (to disable 705 speaker), next switch on VOX adjust settings as per the manual.

One thing I do miss is a built in ATU similar to the elecraft radios, I have tried a few of the aftermarket range but none live up to the elecraft performance, probably best bang for buck is the Kanga QRP Pocket Transmatch.

Were you running the IC-795 barefoot when you chased me when I was in France/Germany just? You were an easy QSO ISTR.

It’s 90 greater so he was bound to have been a good signal.

I was catching up on missed Netflix episodes whilst away (c.f. Homer Simson and ‘Odder Stuff’!) and trying to type on my phone.

Hi Andy
Been running the ic-705 barefoot with an EFHW antenna sloping down the garden to a 5m pole, I have been really impressed with the receiver it does help being laid up at home being able to adjust the pass band, noise reduction and notch filter. Find it best to call after the activator is finished with the initial pileup and starts to call again, spending more time listening is key and you would be surprised how many ops start sending there call whilst the activator is calling them then expect a reply, my chance to pounce!
A lot of these settings I don’t bother with during an activation, though still not sure on the screen but you can always turn it off by tapping the power button

One of these years I will have to visit Europe with a transceiver seems to be a lot of fun on the road to HAM Radio in Friedrichshafen.

Oh yes! I have to confess to feeling a tiny bit smug when I make a contact in this way!
