I/VE-197 - Monte Grappa - Military Memorial First World War

Gerardo (IZ3LEY) and I had an easy activation (physically), but it was very interesting and challenging (due to the antennas and radios we tested and the somewhat unusual location).

Activating a peak in a military area next to the World War I Memorial takes on more significance than just radio. However, some radio amateurs from Belgium and from Italy on a sightseeing tour stopped by to say hello and saw our fishing rods in the distance.

There weren’t many contacts, but between radio tests, antenna tests, and being authorized not to stay too long in the military area, it was a good SOTA day anyway.

Many thanks to everyone who patiently connected,
next time, we’ll do better.

Did you have to apply for permission?

Yes, of course. It used to be enough to notify the military officer on duty the same day. Now they ask for an email to be sent a few days in advance. We weren’t aware of this change, but since there was a running race going by. Other HAM were providing radio assistance, so the military officer agreed anyway, contenting himself with the verbal request on the spot.
