Hi Alan,
On my visit the Farmer was very friendly and accommodating. He appeared to be profoundly deaf and communicated mainly by gesticulating and pointing the route to take. A really nice chap but I don’t think telephone conversation would be easy for him.
Kevin
Fair enough, ill head up and give the door a chap… see what he says! Thanks Kevin ![]()

The last 2 or 3 times I have been, there has been no answer at the farm. The last time the gates were all locked up.
Prior to that I had always spoken to Mrs Bannister who was helpful, but I understand her husband passed away since then.
The OS map shows the 305m contour crossing over the road for a short section. You can climb up the bank up to the fence line and activate from within the bushes/trees but it’s not pleasant.
hmmmm righto… i shall have a look buddy… i can only ask, if no joy ill have to leave or look at an alternative, thanks buddy
Alan
also looks like there is a corner you can activate from where the transmitters are… but im guessing that will be rubbish aswell ![]()
Alan
I think this is still correct info:
I think there are notices on the gates saying no access or similar.
Alan, I used to have the farm’s phone number but can no longer find it. Sorry.
Well, hope mountain was brilliant
must be a proper sweet spot for UHF & VHF! I asked permission a the farm, and they parked me in the paddock, and showed me the way! haha only too happy to let us activate provided we ask permission first.
Fantastic stuff!
Alan
GB3CR is on one of the towers and when I lived on The Wirral a sniff of RF on 70cms would open the repeater. It had a very nice clientele back in the 90s… no riff-raff as Basil Fawlty would say. The same can’t be said for 2m GB3MP (Miss Piggy) which had its antennas about 2/3rd up the 750ft Moel-y-Parc transmitter. That gave it a phenomenal coverage over N. Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, South Lakes etc. and as a result attracted every 'tard and 'kwitt in NW England.
So it’s a nice site Alan and glad to hear you got sorted.
Great to hear Alan. I must admit I was conflicted this morning when I read your post. I do have Mrs Bannister’s number but she’s elderly and I didn’t feel comfortable about passing it on.
Nice family though, with a refreshingly pleasant disposition towards SOTA activators wanting to operate from their private land - as you discovered!
You would’nt have had to worry buddy, I wouldnt have called until I was en-route at a sensible time anyway, but I do get it!
Yes utterly fantastic family, they couldnt be more helpful (short of putting the antennas up for me) its definately going to be on my yearly hill roster from now on! shame I missed you on Shining tor too, you must have been setting up as I was packing up
never mind!
Thanks Tom
Alan
I have done the hill a couple of times. First time I park in the entrance to the farm and wandered in and found a lady who I asked permission from - told me to park up and pointed me in the direction.
Second time, I did the same but no one around. This time I wandererd around the farm (first knocking at the door to the house) and then wandering around to the main barn buildings and spotted someone chopping wood with a chainsaw. After some waiting, I decided to walk a bit further and get their attention. Explain what and why i was wandering around looking lost and then I was directed to park in the field with the horse/pony and walk to the trig.
All very friendly people. But I would not park on their land and operate via their land without first seeking permisison.
As others have said, very friendly people who always say yes to the request. But it is strictly private land with no public access - which is why I usually leave Mrs Bannister with a box of chocolates when I visit - which seems to be favourably received!
